In My Mailbox (96) | Stacking The Shelves (17)

The first full week back at work after a vacation is torture, but this week went by really fast. I think it’s due in part to Bout Of Books, I spent quite a bit of my free time with my nose in a book. PLUS! I ran for 30 minutes straight on the treadmill with no walking intervals and I just needed to share that with you all because I am very proud of it and it feels like if I don’t share something on here, it didn’t happen. ALSO! This was the week of surprising books in my mailbox. I honestly didn’t expect any of the books I got, well except for one and that’s because it’s from Amazon Vine.

Stacking The Shelves 16

For Review:

The Tragedy Paper by Elizabeth LaBan (Vine) – I picked this book out because A) I’m going to the author’s signing in like 20 days and B) I saw Margot tweeting about and was like, hmmm that does indeed sound interesting. It’s about an albino who falls in love with a girl. OH and there’s a big paper the students at the prestigious academy have to write called a tragedy paper. Anyways, I plan on reading this within the week to come. It’s also only 304 pages with 32 chapters so I expect it to be a fast read.

The Wanderer by Robyn Carr (Unsolicited) – I LOLed a little bit at this book because I really disliked the first Robyn Carr book I ever read. But, hmm maybe I should keep my mind open and try. I don’t know. It’s not a priority.

Obsidian Mirror by Catherine Fisher (Unsolicited) – I absolutely love the cover of this book. I’ve really been interested in trying Fisher’s books for awhile, I recently bought her whole Relic Master series and also own Incarceron, so it’s a given that I will read Obsidian Mirror. It’s a trilogy about a mirror and it has magic powers. Three people have been given tasks pertaining to the mirror that are at odds with each other. Only one person can succeed. Color me PUMPED.

Darius & Twig by Walter Dean Myers (Unsolicited) – I’m actually really excited about this book. I love the cover and I’ve reviewed like…6 Walter Dean Myers books so far. Plus this is going to be a quick read — it’s only 201 pages so it actually fits perfectly in my schedule.

Life After Theft by Aprilynne Pike (Unsolicited) – So, I’ve heard awful things about the Wings books, but I think I have book one on my kindle someplace. Anyways, I am kind of shallow and like this cover and it’s blurbed as Paranormalcy meets Heist Society, so why the heck not read it with an open mind.

The Ward by Jordana Frankel (Unsolicited) – Oh goodness that cover you guys. I like it because it’s got like the NYC skyline on the edge of a waterfall. Also, the main character is a drag racer, much like me when I drive home from work. CANNOT WAIT y’all.

The Boyfriend App by Katie Sise (Unsolicited) - The Boyfriend App looks adorable, I cannot even. Plus the main character is a hacker. Awesome.

Unbreakable by Elizabeth Norris (Unsolicited) – This is a sign that I need to read Unraveling like next week because this is the sequel and I’m curious.

The Elite by Kiera Cass (Unsolicited) – I am still kind of on the fence about whether I want to read The Selection or not, but I figure, I like reality TV and dating shows so I’ll probably check it out.

The Silver Dream by Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves (Unsolicited) – I haven’t read book one, Interworld, but it’s Neil Gaiman so I am pretty sure this means I need to purchase Interworld stat.

How Zoe Made Her Dreams (Mostly) Come True by Sarah Strohmeyer (Unsolicited) – Ahh. I am actually pumped up about this book. I love the cover. And honestly this is odd to say, but I like how Harper is branding Strohmeyer’s books with the long title, the specific font and the girl on the cover. I am definitely going to read this AND Smart Girls Get What They Want in 2013. Promise.

Rise by Anna Carey (Unsolicited) – This is the third in the Eve trilogy and I actually still need to read the first two books. I’ll get to them eventually.

The Rising by Kelley Armstrong (Unsolicited) – It’s going to take everything within me to not drop my entire TBR pile plan for January and read this book because omg you guys Kelley Armstrong writes cracktastic books and it’s the last one in the Darkness Rising trilogy and omg, I can’t wait because I inhaled the first trilogy – the Darkest Powers and then I went on to inhale this one — Darkness Rising. And just ahhh, excuse me while I jabber away.

A Touch Of Scarlet by Eve Marie Mont (Unsolicited) – EEEEEEK! SO EXCITED! I fricken loved A Breath Of Eyre and this is the sequel and I can’t wait to see what’s up with Emma and straight up I actually enjoyed reading The Scarlet Letter in high school because I am a huge fricken nerd. This was like the best part of walking out to my mailbox today.

The Starboard Sea by Amber Dermont (Unsolicited) – I actually got the hardcover version of this and now I have a paperback so I assume that means I should read this book, especially because it’s about college in the 1980s and I love college always and forever.

In The Shadow Of Blackbirds by Cat Winters (Netgalley) – I originally saw this on The Book Smugglers and then this morning Kara at Great Imaginations had it in her Stacking The Shelves and so omg I hoped on Netgalley and used my autoapproval status like a total G and downloaded this so it can live on my kindle and omg omg omg it’s about Spanish Influenza and I LOVE DISEASES AND VIRUSES FOREVERRRRRR.

Purchased:

Hopeless by Colleen Hoover – For Kindle – Basically Shanyn said BUY THIS and I said ok. And now it’s sitting there. I’ll read it probably in February though.

Fierce Reads Anthology 1 and 2 – for Kindle – For a short time these are free I think and they contain short stories that are spin offs of the Fierce Reads books. I plan on reading the heck out of them.

In case you skipped it or missed it, here’s a recap of what we’ve posted here last week:

Pretty much dragons are the shit and I loved this book about dragons aimed at children.

I wrote lots of words explaining my love of The Spindlers by Lauren Oliver and decided that if she wrote a phone book, I’d read it.

Want to read Cinder? Check this post out for the 411 on one of the major characters from Scarlet and your chance to win Cinder.

Allison speaks truth when she says we all want to be Kitty Kelley when we grow up.

Allison adds some interesting words to Level 2 by Lenore Appelhans for the Bout Of Books Day 3 Challenge.

I find a lot of reading GIFs and explain how time management works.

That one time I was super awkward and funny and lose my shit over a map shaped like a dragon in a video.

OH MY GAWD! I was shipping these two characters the whole damn time because I might as well be a perv or something.

Sometimes I get books in the mail that make me LOL unintentionally and this time I am giving them away!

The End Is Here and check out this cute Quoted And Noted.

This audiobook made me yawn a lot.

In which Allison and I throw our hats in the ring for Bout Of Books 6.0.

Whoa, I actually enjoyed a 99 cent self published new adult ebook A LOT. STOP THE PRESSES.

  1. Oh! You got Unbreakable, I really liked Unraveling so I ‘m envious about that one. And I loved Incarceron (Sapphique was only so-so, imo) so I’m curious about the new Catherine Fisher. Heard good things about The Tragedy Paper too:)

  2. RISE! You lucky duck, I hope you enjoy books 1 & 2 when you get to them, it’s a good series and I think book 2 was better than book 1, so I have high hopes for book 3!

And I hope you enjoy Smart Girls Get What They Want, it’s very sweet, and I’m thrilled that Sarah has a new book out – I had no idea 😀

And now I want to read Life After Theft, mostly for the cover.

    • I’ll have to move the Eve books up my list. Maybe I will get to them in February.

I love books that are sweet. I’m on pins and needles for it.

Yeah, it’s all about a good cover! 🙂

  3. I’ve heard good things about Hopeless. I’ve been debating buying it. I also need to read Unraveling. We have it at the library, but I just haven’t gotten to it. Seriously, I need about 4 extra hours every day to devote just to reading to even make a dent in my TBR pile. I think my problem is I just want to read too much!

Okay, so enjoy all your goodies! Happy reading 🙂

    • Yah, I basically just bought it because it was cheap, number one on Kindle and Shanyn told me to and usually I do what she says.

Word. I wish the day was four hours longer so I could get to ALL OF THE BOOKS.

      Thanks 🙂

  4. OMG you got The Ward and The Elite. I’m super jealous at this moment. I so want to read those books. Nice haul.

    Grace

  5. Goodness, that’s a lot of unsolicited awesomeness. Also, dude, I’m totally proud of you for running 30 minutes. I’ve gotten to that point myself, and as someone who probably never ran more than 5 minutes non-stop prior to this past year I recognize that that is HUGE. It gets pretty zen after a while, I just zone out and listen to my audiobooks. 🙂

I still need to read A Breath of Eyre, but I really want to! Also I hadn’t even heard of Interworlds until the sequel started showing up on people’s lists this week, but of course it’s going to be awesome.

    Cheers!

  6. So, Unbreakable. I’m pretty pumped to read that one myself because Unraveling was actually really good. It kind of surprised me how much I liked it. But I’m very much looking forward to this sequel.
A Breath of Eyre is a book I’ve been wanting to read for awhile, but haven’t gotten to the library to get it! I’m kind of loving these retellings/reimaginings of classics that are floating around lately!
Also, GO YOU for running for 30 minutes! 🙂

  7. Nice! Totally jealous of Life After Theft and The Elite! Enjoy all those great titles. And WAY TO GO running 30 minutes straight! Go you!

  8. Holy shiz. The Elite. I am beyond jealous right now. You definitely have a bunch of awesomeness ahead of you. And once I get over my aversion to long books (purely intimidation as well as “if I invest myself in this, I’ll never survive” syndrome), the book two reading together thing is ON.

  9. I got that Harper package too! And you are so lucky – I really want to get my hands on THE OBSIDIAN MIRROR. Oh wells.

    Enjoy your books, April!

  10. yay for awesome unsolicited titles! don’t you just love those!?!? i know i do. 🙂 and per your recs I’ve just added Hopeless by Colleen Hoover and the two Fierce Reads anthologies to my kindle. Thanks for the heads up! happy reading!

  11. THE WARD looks so, so good!! OBSIDIAN MIRROR looks fabulous as well.

Hope you enjoy all of your books, April! 🙂

  12. So basically I’m reading Hopeless right now and OH EM GEE — I cannot stay away from it. I started it (bad, bad idea) at 10:45 last night and I DID NOT WANT TO GO TO BED. I’ve snuck in reading time every chance I got today. Not sure where it’s going but it sure as heck is Addicting. (Yes, capital A Addicting.)

    Enjoy all your books!

  13. I grabbed one of the Fierce Read anthologies last week. They’re really good ideas from a marketing perspective, and so much fun to read!

  14. Ah! Everyone has gotten Rise and I am so jealous! I can’t wait to see what you think of that, April. I absolutely adore the Eve trilogy, and after the ending of Once, I want to get my hands on an ARC of Rise as much as possible. The Ward also sounds really interesting, and I’m slightly interested in Unbreakable, even if I didn’t like Unraveling too much. Awesome haul!

  15. ERMMAGHHERRRRD look at your haul! 😉

I want a copy of The Ward and Obsidian Mirror so badly! I am a huge Catherine Fisher fan.

Thanks for the shout out about In the Shadow of Blackbirds! Glad you got a copy!

I will totally have a drink with you at BEA. 🙂 Glad you are going!

  16. Congrats on the running accomplishment!! That is AWESOME! And I can totally appreciate it because I just started running. Right now I run/walk for 45 minutes but probably only like 15 or 20 of that is actual running XD GO YOU!

Also I love your haul! I’m insanely jealous of The Ward and The Elite(!!!!). I LOVED The Selection and I can’t wait to read The Elite!! Eeeep!!

The other books you got are really really cool too. 🙂 Have a great week!!

  17. Freakin A. The Elite. I love The Selection so hard. Gah, read them. Just do it.

Also? HOPELESS. If you can help it at all, put it at the beginning of February cause it is SO FREAKIN GOOD. So, yeah, just do that.

  18. Great haul! We got the same Harper packages. I really enjoyed The Selection, but I’m not sure you’d necessarily like it as much. But do give it a shot! I’m also SO BEHIND on my trilogies- have not read Darkness Rising or the Once trilogies, but I own all the books now. Must get on that! I also liked Wings, but never felt the need to read the rest (though I also own all the books in that series too, lol), but I’m excited for Life After Theft.

  19. Unbreakable and The Ward and the new Strohmeyer book! *claps* These are things I am so excited to dream. Also, Neil Gaiman book is exciting, though I def don’t know anything about it, but I totally own Interworld, so I’ll totally be ready!

Ooh, this also reminds me that I really need to read the first Eve Marie Mont book, because it looks sooooo good, and historical and heck yes!

Lol at how much they want you to love Robyn Carr.

The Selection was a 3 for me. Not great but entertaining in a cheesy dating show sort of way. I am on the fence about reading The Elite because of the drama, and also because I could probably be reading better books. However, the cover makes a firm argument in its favor, so I don’t know. Just know that it’s not dystopian really. Which is fine, but the marketing set this up for a big fall.

  20. They all look lovely! Hope you enjoy them (:

  21. The Boyfriend App looks so good! I hope you enjoy everything you got this week 🙂
