In My Mailbox (92) / Stacking The Shelves (13)

What a whirlwind week! I got so much kindle reading and exercising done that the week went by in a blur. Also, can you believe that it’s December all ready and practically the end of 2012? I know I can’t. Anyways, while it was mostly a quiet week as far as packages go, one package totally caused me to lose my shit in the best possible way. I mean, I opened it and was uttering curse words of joy — as counterintuitive as that sounds. How about you? How was your week? You can let me know in the comments!

Christmas On Mimosa Lane, Nook, Reached, The Winter Witch

For Review:

Reached by Ally Condie audiobook (unsolicited) – Y’all, I’m honestly kind of glad this showed up as an unsolicited audiobook because it’s going to make reading Reached a much higher and easier to achieve priority. ALSO I am so excited to see how the trilogy finally plays out.

Christmas On Mimosa Lane by Anna DeStefano (Vine) – I basically chose this because the words Christmas and Mimosa were in the title. Because this is a Christmas book, you can actually expect a review of it pretty darn soon.

The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston (Vine) -Yo. Witches. Also. Wales. I am beyond pumped up about this historical fantasy and it’s gorgeous cover!

The Sea Of Tranquility by Katja Millay (Netgalley) – So, I requested this based on Allison at The Allure Of Books’ glowing recommendation, because I know her taste and find that it freakishly aligns with mine. Y’all, as soon as I finished up my other kindle read, I snapped this one open while on my bike Friday and pretty much did not stop reading it until I finished it at 1:30 in the afternoon on Saturday. It was completely gripping and has helped my mini slump. I then proceeded to tweet my love of this book from the rooftops. It is SO good. Like, get on Netgalley and request it or buy it for your ereader. SOMETHING. Because OHHHH MY GAWD IT IS AMAZING.

Shadowlands by Kate Brian (Netgalley) – I won’t lie, when the publisher of the book approved me for Shadowlands I was tickled pink. I’m pumped up to read this book about a girl who is in witness protection program because she like was attacked by a serial killer, but she fought back and the serial killer escaped. Fricken HECK YES! I mean, who did not love that movie about Mary Kate and Ashley where kind of the same thing happened only it was the mob and they witnessed something so they go to Australia and hang out on a boat. Yeah, that movie was the bomb. So I have a special place in my heart for books that have the witness protection program.

NOOK with Breathless by Sophie Jordan, Radiant by Cynthia Hand, Stupid Perfect World by Scott Westerfeld, Cruisin’ by Sarah Mlynowski (Unsolicited) – You guys, okay here’s the story. I was teaching ALL day Wednesday in an area with no service on my cell phone, which was fine because when the teacher I was guest speaking in had planning periods or gym class I would hang out in the teacher’s lounge and read my kindle. Anyways, after an hour long drive heading back home I roll up into my drive way where there are two packages and a box on my porch. The box was dresses from modcloth. So anyways, I open the package with the Nook in it and I’m like oh wow this is cool they put a book in a gray box, I wonder what book it is. THEN I open up the box and I yell out loud HOLY FUCKING SHIT. Luckily no one was home to hear me and I think my elderly neighbor went back to Florida. I then might have proceeded to utter a few more swears. But yeah, you guys, I was SO excited! So anyways, the point of the Nook is to promote Harper’s new line called HarperTeen Impulse which is a digital imprint that is specifically focused on short stories and novellas. As a lady who is pressed for time lately, I am pumped the heck up about this new imprint. I could not be more excited!

Purchased:

Lizzy Bright And The Buckminster Boy by Gary D. Schmidt (Kindle) – Yo this was a Kindle Daily deal and like, I already had a physical beat up used library discard copy of Lizzy Bright And The Buckminster Boy and so, I just figured for that price, I will replace my yucky copy and clear more space from my bookshelves.

The Survivors by Amanda Havard (Kindle) – So, this book was $0.99 and I really like the author as a person and have subscribed to like one of her playlists on Spotify. Anyways, I was supposed to review this like a long time ago but then never got around to it and I still feel awful and so whatever, I impulse purchased this and hope to really enjoy it and I think my boyfriend will like this book too.

Blackout by Connie Willis (Audible) – This was in the 2 for 1 sale and y’all the narrator is Katherine Kellgren, so hello insta-listen!

The Prince Of Tides by Pat Conroy (Audible) – I think this book is one of those highly recommended first listens. Anyways, I have a copy of this in physical form but because it’s long I have no idea when I’ll get to it and audio is just much, much more convenient for my life. Also, this was part of the 2 for 1.

In case you skipped it or missed it, here’s a recap of what we’ve posted here last week:

If you’re looking for another solid read set in the 1920s, might I recommend SIRENS by Janet Fox?

Maybe you are low on your numbers for the Goodreads 2012 Reading Challenge? Colin Fischer by Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz is a very quick listen and actually good and will help you to boost that number!

Y’all, 2013 will be upon us soon. THESE ARE THE BOOKS YOU NEED on your 2013 TBR!

Remember that time it took me forever to FINALLY read Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi? And then I kicked myself for waiting SO long!

Finally, I revive Quoted And Noted and spark a Twitter discussion about re-reading Graceling and Fire with this quote from Fire by Kristin Cashore.

  1. I’ve been really excited about all these new novella and short story imprints lately! I mean, who wouldn’t want to read a short story–quickly! This is totally my kind of thing! That’s so awesome that Harper sent you a NOOK! What fun!

    • Me too! I just am in the mood for shorter books lately, although you probably could not tell that based on my current reads (a 20+ hour audiobook and a 500+ page YA book).

I’m very grateful to Harper for the NOOK! 🙂

  2. Oh, dude, you are SO LUCKY to have gotten that nook, but then again, you totally deserve it! I’ve got an ARC of SHADOWLANDS and I’m pretty excited for that.

    Happy reading!

  3. Haha. I bet I would have shouted some happy expletives as well, if I found a Nook with some ebooks already loaded on it. 🙂

I hope you enjoy your new stuff. I’m feeling quite shocked as well that it is December. I swear it was March yesterday. Time seems to go more quickly now that I am older, am out of school and have a full-time job. When I was in college, the year seemed to last so long.

    • I think happy expletives are a normal reaction lol.

It’s true, with a full time 40+ hour a week job, time goes by so fast these days. I wonder if it’s because the hours of the day are so jam-packed?

  4. Reached on audiobook? I’m so jealous! Jack Riccobono is my FAVORITE!

  5. Wow-that is an awesome haul! Jealous that you got Shadowlands-it sounds so cool and I hope reading it is an enjoyable experience.

  6. Oh wow, you got a Nook in the mail! How awesome is that. And it arrived together with dressed from ModCloth, even better. Have fun reading on your new device. 🙂

  7. Wow. That’s awesome. Lucky for you! I also got Shadowlands and am pretty excited about it. Enjoy!

  8. I’m really really glad now I got a copy of The Sea of Tranquility from Netgalley! I’ll have to move it up the reading pile. 🙂

I still haven’t started that Ally Condie trilogy, or Under the Never Sky and Graceling. So many books waiting!

Ooh is that a new Scott Westerfeld book? Will definitely have to look into that one!

I want to read The Winter Witch too, which is why I got the first book recently, The Witch’s Daughter.

    • Hurrah! I am glad you got a copy too because it is SO so good.

I hear ya, there’s a ton of books waiting on my TBR too — like the A Touch Mortal series and much, much more.

The Scott Westerfeld is a novella. 🙂

Is The Witch’s Daughter part of a series? If so, I guess that means I have to get it, but the impression I got from the summary and back cover was that The Winter Witch can stand alone.

  9. Wasn’t the Nook promotion for the new imprint insanely smart of them? I didn’t even get one and I think it’s awesome. I snagged up Sea of Tranquility based largely on Allison’s review as well. It’s being shoved aside for Christmas reads at the moment, but I know I’m going to be getting to it soon. Also, yes, I would request a book based on the words Christmas and Mimosa being in the title as well…I mean–they go together, right?

    • I think the Nook/Kindle promotion was genius. It practically guarantees that at least one of those novellas will be read.

Oh man, she hopped on g-chat and demanded that I request it and because I am pliable I did so. GOOD LIFE CHOICE.

Word. ALL OF THE CHRISTMAS BOOKS FOREVER. <3

  10. I read The Witch’s Daughter last year and was in love and am on pins and needles to read The Winter Witch. I don’t want to read it before it comes out so I have something to look forward to after Christmas. Isn’t that weird? But trust me, I have enough reading material on my Nook and at home to keep me busy.

  11. You picked up some awesome books this week! I think the one I’d most want to read would have to be The Winter Witch.

  12. Enjoy your new Nook. I am also excited by Harper Collins new Digital Line as well. You had an awesome week.

    Grace

  13. Wait wait wait. You got sent a nook?? For free??? With books on it???? Life is so unfair sometimes. 😉

  14. Congrats on the good reads and Nook!
I know you will enjoy all of them. Feel free to stop by and check out My IMM

  15. I would totally swear with joy in that instance.

I have so had my eye on The Winter Witch, because that cover. You shall tell me whether it deserves the cover. I depend on you.

BAHAHA, I totally know the movie you are talking about. I was OBSESSED with MK& A back in the day.

  16. How great is that! So happy for you with regards to the Nook! I hope you enjoy the pre-loaded books on it :D.

I really need to read Matched, Reached and the other one!

Have a great reading week 😀

  17. I’m pretty excited for HarperTeen Impulse. (Okay, fine. And a little jealous of the Nook.)
