Ten 2013 Book Releases You NEED To Add To Your TBR

10 2013 Books You Need On Your Reading List

Each year’s wave of newly released books is kind of a double edged sword. These up and coming reads are awesome because THEY ARE SHINY and have cool concepts and who does not freakin’ love anticipation. Seriously, half of the fun is in the anticipation! On the other hand, older books sometimes fall by the wayside in favor of the movers and shakers. But you know what, I think there is cause to celebrate new releases and that hey, the book industry must be thriving for us to have SO MANY books to look forward to. Here’s my top ten anticipated releases and I kind of think you should add them to your TBR so that when we eventually read them, we can discuss them!

1. Starglass by Phoebe North

Starglass Phoebe North Book Cover

Why?: I’ve been reading Phoebe’s blog for awhile and following her reviews on goodreads. She’s a very thoughtful and articulate writer in her reviews, and I would imagine that Starglass is also intelligent and well-written. ALSO I am a fan of the summary and the idea that doing your duty and love can be sort of a conflict. Plus SPACE!

2. You Look Different In Real Life by Jennifer Castle

You Look Different In Real Life Jennifer Castle Book Cover

Why?: This is so shallow, but I love the pink bangs on the girl on the cover. The premise is fabulous — it’s about five kids who have been filmed at every five years in their lives for a movie. They have a bond. Anyways, the main character Justine does not feel like a star or anything, but when she gets to reunite with her costars she doesn’t pass it up. Y’all, my inner reality TV addict is CLAMORING for this book!

3. Severed Heads, Broken Hearts by Robyn Schneider

Severed Heads Broken Hearts Book Cover Robyn Schneider

Why?: Basically Robyn is the shizzle. Is shizzle still a thing? Am I showing my age here? Anyways, the summary describes a boy who thinks everyone has a big tragedy waiting for them that changes them. Then it posits what happens when there is MORE tragedy? HECK YES.

4.The End Games by T. Michael Martin

The End Games T Michael Martin Book Cover

Why?: I pretty much already mentioned this in a singular Waiting On Wednesday post, but basically the cover evokes feelings of The Knife of Never Letting Go. Also. Dystopia. West Virginia. Zombies. Brothers.

5. Loki’s Wolves by KL Armstrong and MA Marr

Lokis Wolves KL Armstrong Melissa Marr Book Cover

Why?: If you can’t figure out who those authors are, there’s little hope. (Kidding, you might not be a big YA fan or anything). ANYWAYS I am SOOOOO excited for this because I love me some Norse mythology. ALSO. Middle grade forever and for always.

6. The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson

The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson Book Cover

Why?: Pretty much I will read anything Brandon Sanderson writes ever. I am a total fangirl and you can judge me all day but OMG I AM SO PUMPED UP. This is an epic fantasy set in an alternate reality of our world and knowing Sanderson, it’s probably going to be creative and brilliant.

7. A Spear Of Summer Grass by Deanna Raybourn

A Spear of Summer Grass Deanna Raybourn Book Cover

Why: Oh you guys, I am so sure that as an author Deanna Raybourn can do no wrong. ALSO. She is totally underrated and I wish more people would read her books. ANYWAYS, this book A Spear Of Summer Grass is about a flapper who is exiled to Kenya. Pretty much I can’t wait.

8. Dance Of The Red Death by Bethany Griffin

Dance Of The Red Death Bethany Griffin

Why: Friends, I kind of was head over heels addicted to Masque Of The Red Death, so I am BEYOND excited to see what happens in the sequel and am curious about the developments with the love triangle.

9. This Is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith

This Is What Happy Looks Like Jennifer E Smith Book Cover

Why?: I cannot handle the adorable on the cover. I absolutely swooned and fell in LOVE with The Statistical Probability of Love At First Sight and so, I cannot wait to get my hands on This Is What Happy Looks Like.

10. The Reece Malcolm List by Amy Spaulding

The Reece Malcolm List Amy Spalding Book Cover

Why?: So basically, Devan lives with her dad and he dies so she’s shipped off to a mother she has never met, Reece Malcolm in LA. She starts to get everything she wants out of life, but the possibility looms of it being yanked away. PRETTY MUCH I AM THERE SIGN ME UP NOW.

  1. I’m so excited about The End Games. I love the cover so much.

And I will DANCE WITH Bethany Griffin’s Dance of the Red Death when I get the chance to read it. See what I did there? I like your list. I may puff up my TBR with it.

Thanks for doing some of my gettin-ready-for-2013 work for me!

  2. Whoa! Cross referencing this to my Goodreads TBR because there are quite a few that are new to me and look all sorts of awesome. I’m really looking forward to the Reece Malcolm List as well, Amy Spalding’s website is awesome ( and that Courtney Summer’s cover blurb doesn’t hurt either.)

The Deanna Raybourn and Brandon Sanderson titles look pretty darn cool so thanks for the heads up!

  3. *snuggles*

Also, how did I miss Jen Castle’s cover reveal?! So great–and the concept sounds fantastic–like the Up Series, which I loooove. I am excite!

  4. THE END GAMES THE END GAMES THE END GAMES. Yeah, I’m real excited for this one.

  5. Yes, I’m so excited to read This Is What Happy Looks Like! Plus, I found some to add through my TBR thanks to this post.

  6. Oh, nice list! I haven’t heard of a couple of these, and they all look fabulous. I really debated over putting Starglass in my own list. Gah! Cannot wait for these books…

  7. I am looking forward to almost all of these as well especially The Reece Malcolm List-looks so good!

  8. Severed Heads, Broken Hearts looks amazing! Robyn Schneider is the shizzle and more! Her YouTube channel is epic and her videos are all amazing. Plus, love the cover! It’s really unique which is always refreshing.

I loved Statistical, it was cute, fun, sweet and even caused me to tear up. I’m really looking forward to read more by Jennifer and This Is What Happy Looks Like sounds super.

    Great list, April!

  9. Goodreads page open while I read through your post — some of them I had on my TBR but yay, I got to add some more, too!

  10. Awesome picks! So many of these I WANTED to be on my list but hey at least they were in my Catalog Creepin’ posts & on my TBR. Haven’t heard of a couple of these though so WOO!

  11. There are a lot of books on here that I don’t recognize and that makes me REALLY EXCITED but also super overwhelmed because OMG I’M NEVER GOING TO HAVE TIME TO READ ALL THE BOOKS.

  12. Great list! Way excited for Dance of the Red Death, the Sanderson one, and I’ll have to check out End Games. Thanks for the list! Adding to my TBR! 😀

  13. Hiya, April!

I’m Mike (“T. Michael”) Martin, and I wrote The End Games. Thank you *so much* for featuring my book on this list: It was an honor to be included (and in such amazing company!).

If there’s ever anything I can do for you or your wonderful site, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

    Thanks again, and happy holidays!

    Best,
    Mike Martin

  14. I am with you on pretty much all of these. Also, I didn’t really have any idea about Deanna Raybourn being awesome, but you love her, so I think I may need to look into her like right the hell now!

  15. Omg dying. *adds all of these to TBR list*

  16. There are a few here that I hadn’t heard of yet. Thanks, April! I want to/totally will read all of these.

  17. A Spear of Summer Grass sounds really good. I mean, come on, a FLAPPER in KENYA? There’s bound to be a great story there 🙂

  18. I want, I want, I want! 2013 looks like it will be fantastic but you’re right, there are still plenty of books from this year, and older, that I still have to read!

I want The Reece Malcolm List and numbers 1-3 – love the covers of those, too!

  19. Naturally I saw The End Games and I was like YES PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

  20. These all look so stupendously awesome. Hope you get to read them all.

  21. Oh I love how cute Statistical Probability was, so I’m definitely adding This is what happy looks like. I also read The Knife of Never Letting Go as a group read on goodreads. It’s not my typical YA but I couldn’t put it down. Will add The End Games. I haven’t read zombie type yet. Anything scary isn’t normally my thing… Gotta get out of the box somehow. Adding to a list is a start!
