Top Ten Favorite Children’s Authors

Hi everyone, it’s Allison.
This weeks topic for Top Ten Tuesday is Top Ten Favorite Authors In ___ Genre.
I decided to go with Top Ten Favorite Children’s Authors!

1) P.D. Eastman

My favorite book as a child was The Best Nest. I carried it with me everywhere, and I had it memorized. I don’t remember it word for word anymore but I do know that this book will always have a special place in my heart.

2) Dr. Seuss

Literally, I grew up with Dr. Seuss. I have the entire collection. I really do think that those books are what started my passion for reading when I was younger. I mean, how could you resist a little Green Eggs and Ham or a little Oh, The Places You’ll Go?

3) Beatrix Potter

I also have the entire collection of Beatrix Potter books.  I loved The Tale Of Peter Rabbit, and reading about all the misadventures that Peter Rabbit would get himself into, and how his mother would respond.

4) Astrid Lindgren

Pippi Longstocking was the little girl I think I always wished I could be. She was rebellious, strong, brave, and clever. Plus, she went on all these fun adventures which I loved learning about as I read them. Major kudos to Astrid Lingren for creating her!

5) A.A. Milne

Winnie The Pooh stole my heart a long time ago and has never really let it go. He will always be the fun, loveable bear who taught me important life lessons without me even realizing it. Also, I love how A.A. Milne’s work is so quoteable!

6) Shel Silverstein

My connection with Shel Silverstein stems from my connection to my grandmother who I am really close with. One year for Christmas she got me Where The Sidewalk Ends, and it became kind of like “our thing”. She also gave me A Light In The Attic and Falling Up each with their own special message from her on the inside. This year for Christmas, I’m going to ask her for Every Thing On It so that I can keep the tradition alive. It means that much to me.

6) Eric Carle

Who can resist The Very Hungry Caterpillar? No one. It’s a fun story with an actual lesson attached to it, and it is filled with beautiful illustrations too!

7)  Maurice Sendak

What list would be complete without the man who introduced us to Max and his wild things? He showed us how powerful an imagination can be and how that is a truly beautiful thing. I will forever be grateful to him for that. “Let the wild rumpus start!”

8) Roald Dahl

Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, The Witches, The Twits, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Oh the list goes on and on! His books are the things childhood dreams are made of, and I will forever love them.

9) Johanna Spyr

Like Pippi Longstocking, Heidi was girl I always wished I was. Even in the worst of circumstances, she was fearless but loved and she impacted all the people around her. For some Heidi may be a little ‘preachy’ but I loved it as a child and after thinking about it I really want to re-read it now.

10) Jim Davis

Not necessarily just a children’s author but I’m putting this here because growing up, I loved Garfield. In fact, I did a research project on Jim Davis and Garfield when I was in 4th grade, and even dressed up like Garfield while presenting it.  I still read the comics today, and they never fail to bring a smile to my face.

Who are some of your favorite children’s authors?

This is a list after my own heart! Love children’s books.

Here’s my Ten Ten Favorite Travel Writers. I hope you’ll stop in!

  2. Those are some really awesome writers.
I have only read a few because, for example, Dr. Seuss has never really been popular here. But the ones of your list that I’ve tried, I loved.
So I’ll try to check out the rest.

If you still like children’s books, i recommend Oliver Jeffers, he’s does this really cute picture books about a boy and a penguin that are adorable.

  3. Great list! I love children’s books, and still read them all the time. If this were my list, I would add E.D. Baker, Frances Hodgson Burnett, L.M. Montgomery, Beverly Cleary, and Judy Blume. Roald Dahl is one of my faves in any genre!

Also, I have a FANTASTIC giveaway of a SIGNED copy Lauren Oliver’s new book, THE SPINDLERS, going on HERE!

  4. Aw, this list makes me all sorts of nostalgic! I grew up on so many of these. 🙂

  5. I love The Best Nest too! I read many of these as a kid and later enjoyed revisiting them with my daughter. Fun list, Allison!

  6. Seuss & Silverstein for the win!

  7. This is a good one because I think our love of reading stems from childhood. I have to say that AA Milne, Dr Seuss, James Harriott, Beatrix Potter & R.L. Stine are my favourites. Stine even fostered my love for the horror genre that still carries on through today! It’s amazing how much of an impact these authors had on my life (and still do).

  8. I love children’s books so much. Roald Dahl would definitely be at the top of my list. An author I have really fallen in love with recently is Grace Lin. Have you read Where the Mountain Meets the Moon? It’s amazing.

  9. Great list. Definitely a lot of my favorites.

  10. Dr. Seuss, HECK YES. There’s nothing quite like One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. And, of course, The Lorax <3

  11. Beatrix Potter! For some reason I got the dorkiest smile when I read that.
