Top Ten Books To Get You In The Halloween Spirit!

Hi everyone, it’s Allison.
It’s officially time to get into the Halloween spirit.
Here are some books to help you out!

1) The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat by Stan and Jan Berenstain
This is a classic book from my childhood, and it was the first book that came to mind when I thought about books and Halloween. I guess it has really stuck with me, hasn’t it?

2) The Legend of Sleepy Hallow by Washington Irving
This is a classic book for Halloween. What is my favorite version of The Legend of Sleepy Hallow? WISHBONE! (Click for YouTube link)

Anna Dressed In Blood, Kendare Blake, Book COver

3) Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake
A ghost hunter & a homicidal ghost? The perfect combination to get you into the Halloween spirit.

4) Dracula by Bram Stoker
Admittedly I haven’t read Dracula yet but I have always planned on it. I mean, it’s a classic novel, and it’s about vampires. What would Halloween be like without vampires?

Possess, Gretchen McNeil, Book Cover, Blue

5) Possess by Gretchen McNeil
Demons. Possession. Murder. Mystery. Need I say more? This book definitely has the spookiness that is required for Halloween in spades.

6) A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray
Reading all about the “Members of the Order” is the perfect way to get into the Halloween spirit. Plus, it’s Libba Bray, and you can’t go wrong with that!

7) The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
This book sent chills up and down my spine when I read it – very suspenseful and creepy which would make for a good novel for Halloween.

8) Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again…” This book really is a classic gothic psychological thriller. Also, Mrs. Danvers is CREEPY!

9) Bunnicula: A Rabbit-Tale of Mystery by Deborah and James Howe
A vampire bunny? Yes, please! This book is super cute, and entertaining, and all these years later it has stuck with me, and made me think of Halloween.

10) The Goosebumps Series by R.L. Stein
What Halloween book list would be complete without R.L. Stein? Some of these books still creep my out and I’m twenty-five years old!

What are some of your favorite books to get you in the Halloween spirit?

  1. Bunnicula and Goosebumps take me back. I hadn’t considered The Lovely Bones, but you’re right it is very creepy. And Anna Dressed in Blood is an awesome Halloween pick. Fun list!

  2. Great list! I think I’ve only read one or two of the list – I’m pretty sure I read The Bearnstains book but I don’t remember for sure, and I know I read A Great and Terrible Beauty – 😀 I’ll try to check out the others.

  3. YAY Another Goosebumps!
    I love it!

  4. I really liked Anna Dressed in Blood and Dracula. I plan to get to Rebecca some day. Awesome list.

  5. WISHBONE was such a fantastic show!!!! We have a few of the old VHS tapes from when my 2 older daughters were little 🙂 I like the creepy old classics at Halloween and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow as well as Dracula are perfect picks!! Can you believe I’ve never read Rebecca??? Need to remedy that soon. Great list!

  6. Berenstain Bears!! Man, I loved them. 🙂 Also, I adored Wishbone. Hubby laughs at any time I profess my love for that show. But it was awesome!
    My Top Ten

  7. Ahaha love the Berenstain Bears — that was a fave for me too!

  8. Ohmygosh, The Lovely Bones haunted me for the LONGEST time. It still doesn’t when I think about it. Love the children’s classics! I still haven’t read Anna or Posses, but I own them both! Trying to get around to them, so hard. XD

    My TTT

  9. I have Sleepy Hollow on my list too. 🙂

Bunnicula is such a good pick!!

  10. I LOVE the Berenstein Bears! Totally forgot about them! Great list! 😀
    My TTT. Happy Tuesday! ;D

  11. Love the Bunnicula shout out! I love that series, and still have all the books even though I’m a grown-up and stuff now.

  12. BUNNICULA! That’s the best. I totally forgot about that book, which is super sad, because it’s amazing. I need to reread that. 😀

  13. I haven’t seen A GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY on other lists and frankly I still need to read that one, although it sounds as though her latest, THE DIVINERS, would also be a great Halloween read.

I definitely agree with you about THE LOVELY BONES and REBECCA. Also, I highly recommend DRACULA. It’s excellent.

  14. My kids and I just found a new Halloween book, Creepy Kitchen, by Lee Newman. It is really cute and very funny! Here is the review I did on it. http://books4linda.blogspot.com/2012/09/creepy-kitchen-by-lee-newman.html I think that you can find it for sale on Creepy Kitchen’s Facebook page.

  15. I remember Bunnicula!!! I have enjoyed remembering old childhood favorites through this Top 10.

  17. AGGGH! Bunnicula, The Bernstein Bears AND Goosebumps! You are a girl after my own horror heart. I just love that you included kids books on this list (because seriously, aren’t they so great?!). And Dracula is a MUST READ. So amazing. Great picks, lady!

  18. Awesome list! Love Rebecca and I have to read a Great and Terrible Beauty.
Feel free to check out my list…

  19. There are sooo many great kids Halloween books out there, I had to stop myself from putting 15 on my list! 😀 Actually, I think I was so successful that I didn’t put any…oops!

Okay, and Rebecca is my next read, I think…it’s shown up on at least 3 lists so far…the only other book to show up more is Anna Dressed in Blood!

  20. I love your list! I used to collect Goosebumps and I still have them all. Here is my Top Ten.

  21. Such a fun list! I totally forgot about kids books when I was making my list, but I’m glad that others remembered. And I had to laugh at your inclusion of DRACULA and your explanation. I almost did the exact same thing! One of these years I’ll actually finish it for R.I.P.!

  22. Dracula is on my list as well. Can’t go wrong with that classic. I also loved Goosebumps as a kid, although they scared the crap out of me! ha. Great list!

  23. You totally just took me on a trip down memory lane with The Berenstain Bears, Bunnicula, and Goosebumps! I think I need to read all of these books for Halloween, especially since they’re so quick and fun.

  24. This is such a great list!!!

  25. That Berenstain Bears one is also one that pops to mind for me! It definitely left an impression. Also, The Haunted House starring Mickey and Donald Duck from my childhood leaps to mind.

  26. Evvvvvveryone (except me) has Anna on their list! I can tell I need to dive into this one right away. Maybe while I’m on my roadtrip this weekend? Maybe…

    Thanks for sharing!

  27. The Berenstain Bears!! I love it!! haha

  28. We have some similarities in our TTT lists. I also included Bunnicula and Rebecca.

I love Bunnicula so much. I didn’t read it until I was in grad school for a children’s lit class. But ever since then (about 6 years ago) I have loved Bunnicula. And I don’t usually like books with animals telling the story. But Bunnicula is a huge exception.

    And Rebecca! OMG, totally creep-tastic!

Great list! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  29. heck yes to Anna dressed in blood. That book was creepy as hell. I read that one last year around this time. It was the perfect spooky read.

  30. I have to tell you I didn’t even honestly know that Sleepy Hallow was a real place until we drove by it to go camping last month. This is one of the reasons I’m loving living on the east coast–all of these places I’d only read about turn out to be real! I also live quite near Amityville…

  31. The Bernstein Bears <333
