In My Mailbox (86) / Stacking The Shelves (7)

This Saturday is pretty much my ideal. No plans for today. Rain. A pile of books I’m excited to read. I’ve got a book signing to look forward to tomorrow. Plus, I have no outstanding reviews to write. In short, it is my version of a perfect Saturday morning/afternoon. PLUS, I’ve a slew of new books to share with you. Huzzah!

In My Mailbox 86

Purchased:

The Killing Moon by NK Jemisin (Kindle) – After reading some incredibly positive reviews and having The Killing Moon on my wishlist for pretty much FOREVER, I immediately impulse purchased it when I saw that it was on sale for $1.99. At that price, I don’t think twice before clicking.

Ashfall by Mike Mullin (Kindle) – On Thursday, Ashfall was the kindle deal of the day, so after consulting Facebook, I purchased it. Plus, I think FYA gave it a positive review.

The Mark Of Athena by Rick Riordan (Audible) – I’ve listened to the first two Heroes of Olympus books and loved Joshua Swanson’s narration, so I figured I would keep the streak up and listen to book three.

Dune by Frank Herbert (Audible) – I tend to spend my Audible credits in 2s, so as this was on my wishlist and on my fill in the gaps list, I plonked down a credit for it.

Legion by Brandon Sanderson (Audible) – FREE! Ahhh. Okay, so Allison at The Allure Of Books told me this was free on Audible and I snatched it up because I love Brandon Sanderson’s writing like no other. Apparently Legion is a novella, and y’all I cannot wait to listen.

For Review:

Wings Of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy by Tui T. Sutherland (Vine) – Y’all this is a fantasy middle grade book about DRAGONS! WITH! A! MAP! Do you really need me to explain why I picked this out more intricately?

Through To You by Emily Hainsworth (Unsolicited) – Whooooo finished copy! Y’all, I am BEYOND pumped up to read this. The reviews I’ve read from people I trust have totally convinced me I need to read this by the end of the month.

Fang Girl by Helen Keeble (Unsolicited) – Sigh, I got this earlier over the summer and haven’t gotten to it yet, but rest assured I will attempt to read the awesome looking Fang Girl by Halloween!

Dark Eden by Patrick Carman (Unsolicited) – YOU GUYS! I am actually really excited for this because I love both of Patrick Carman’s Floors books and while this is nothing like Floors, I am familiar with and like the author, so fingers crossed that I like Dark Eden.

Dark Eden: Eve Of Destruction by Patrick Carman (Unsolicited) – AND THE SEQUEL. I’m totally going to read the heck out of these books.

Feedback by Robison Wells (Unsolicited) – Basically this book is silently judging me until I read Variant. OKAY BOOK YOU WIN, I WILL READ VARIANT. By the end of the year. PINKY SWEAR.

Something Strange And Deadly by Susan Beth Dennard (Unsolicited) – OH SNAP, motivation to read a previous obtained through VINE book much faster.

Ten by Gretchin McNeil (Unsolicited) – Finished copy! HOLLA! We all already know I’ll be reading this book AS SOON AS I GET THE CHANCE/time.

The Turning by Francine Prose (Unsolicited) – Although I find the original The Turn Of The Screw not exactly to my taste, I will read the heck out of every single retelling.

Don’t Turn Around by Michelle Gagnon (Unsolicited) – OKAY I GET IT WORLD, you want me to read this book. Y’all, I am buried under the pressure to read this one.

The Madness Underneath by Maureen Johnson (Netgalley) – AWWW yeah, I totally screamed when I saw the approval for this. I am so terribly excited for the sequel to THE NAME OF THE STAR.

What Happens Next by Colleen Clayton (Netgalley) – This is a debut novel about a girl with amnesia and holy crap am I excited to read it.

In case you skipped it or missed it, here’s a recap of what we’ve posted here last week:

In which Allison reviews LATE LATE AT NIGHT by Rick Springfield and gets Jesse’s Girl stuck in my head. THANKS  CO-BLOGGER, THANKS A LOT. I’m totally going to get this song stuck in HER head tomorrow during our road trip. Aww yeah.

That one time I admitted to liking time travel, but not being too terribly impressed with MIRA’S DIARY: LOST IN PARIS by Marissa Moss.

GIFs and swearsand just totally cutting loose? Yeah, bro, I had WAYYYY too much fun reviewing the audiobook of DRACULA by Bram Stoker, just in time for Halloween.

Walter Dean Myers has impressed me again and again with his storytelling ability, and as a total social studies nerd, I loved ALL THE RIGHT STUFF.

Holy moly, I cannot ever resist a dome book, as I confessed in my review of SKYLARK by Meagan Spooner.

Remember that one time I totally silently sobbed during the ending of THE GIRL WHO FELL BENEATH FAIRYLAND AND LED THE REVELS THERE by Catherynne M. Valente?

Probably the highlight of the blog this week was Catherynne Valente’s guest post LOOKING GLASS GIRLS and the chance to win her two Fairyland books (go fourth and enter, y’all).

And yes, I did love The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland SO MUCH that I did a QUOTED AND NOTED for it.

Why don’t I review short story anthologies more? Seriously, they are awesome, check this review of THE CURIOSITIES by Maggie Stiefvater, Brenna Yovanoff, and Tessa Gratton.

Oh heyyyy I got to ask Ned Vizzini THREE QUESTIONS and give away an ARC of THE OTHER NORMALS. Internationally, y’all.

Speaking of THE OTHER NORMALS by Ned Vizzini, I liked it for the most part and am convinced I know Perry in real life.

  4. Re: the Dune audiobook–> That is one of my favorite audiobook experiences. It takes ages and ages and some of the words, since it is a full cast, are pronounced differently by various narrators. I drove from Boston to Philadelphia and back listening to it (and that was only halfway!) but it made my time pass so quickly. I really hope you like it. Give it a chance to get into it if you don’t fall into it right away.

Totally worth a credit! It’s like 23- 26 hours long!

  5. Wow- you got some awesome books this week. I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Through to You, Ten, and The Madness Underneath. Happy reading!

  18. The Killing Moon is slow, I warn you. It’s so worth it, though, because the second book is insanely amazing.

Oh, also, Through to You is great. Don’t Turn Around is your average adventure, but I think you’ll have fun.

  19. I seriously love Ashfall, it is a bit dark at points, but it is so amazing. It is still one of my all time favorite books! I just finished Ashen Winter, and I think I loved it even more than the first one. You really got some amazing books this week! I have Ten, and I am desperately hoping to read it really soon. I hope you enjoy all your amazing books. Thank you for sharing and for stopping by my StS!
