In My Mailbox (85) / Stacking The Shelves (6)

I have to say there’s a certain amount of satisfaction and pride in accomplishing a lot on the blog. As many of you know, it’s Bloggiesta weekend and I have been mad busy writing reviews, but taking a break between each review to read a chapter of my book. I decided another break was in order to participate in the weekly book haul memes. My week has been AWESOME. No late night teaching. Plus? I worked extra hard on Thursday so my boss just up and gave me Monday off, paid. I feel like I just won at working. ANYWAYS. My mailbox was pretty laid back this week.

In My Mailbox 85 Books

Purchased:

Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs (Kindle) – This book was free on Kindle at the time of purchase, so I was like, ahhh what the heck, might as well add it to my kindle even though I have a physical ARC (which I feel awful about not reading yet). Apparently Sweet Venom is a modern take on Medusa. I can’t wait, y’all.

A Poisoned Season by Tasha Alexander (Kindle) – This is book two of the Lady Emily mysteries and for $1.99 I could not help purchasing.

A Fatal Waltz by Tasha Alexander (Kindle) – This is book three of the Lady Emily mysteries and again was only $1.99.

Princess Of Glass by Jessica Day George (Kindle) – Ahhh okay, so I guess this is a companion novel to Princess Of The Midnight Ball, which I also have on my kindle and supposedly is like a Cinderella retelling. Whatever, it’s Jessica Day George so of course I impulsively clicked purchase, especially at the $1.99 price point.

Boy’s Life by Robert R. McCammon (Kindle) – I own a physical copy of this, but it’s tattered, used and falling apart. Boy’s Life is a book I read in high school and was utterly engrossed in. It’s a mystery, but very, very well done and kept me turning the 600 plus pages. At 99 cents, I decided hey I should just buy this and donate my other copy.

The Bastard by John Jakes (Kindle) – I have not read this book yet, but after student teaching and reading North And South (the Civil War book, not the one with Mr. Thornton SWOOON), I went on a binge and bought used copies of every John Jakes book I could find. Unfortunately my copy of The Bastard is in awful condition, SO when I saw that it was on sale for 99 cents today, I was like oh snap I GET TO CULL A BOOK FROM MY PHYSICAL CONNECTION. And much rejoicing was had.

For Review:

Immortal Surrender by Claire Ashgrove (unsolicited) – What is this I cannot even. Y’all there’s a man with tits and flowing blonde hair and a sword and stained glass windows on the cover. I cannot even. OH and apparently it’s part of the Curse Of The Templars series. So, I’m not too sure about reading this because I have not read the first book, but judging by the inside, you don’t need to have read the other books to be able to keep up. My mind is open, y’all.

The Boy In The Box by Cary Fagan (Vine) – Okay, so this book has an 11 year old kid who helps his family run a nursing home. His BFF is an 81 year old man. One day the kid runs away to a medicine show and imprisonment ensues. YOU GUYS HELLO I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS BOOK.

The Great Unexpected by Sharon Creech (unsolicited) – Friends, I was so excited to tear open the package and see Sharon Creech’s latest. Ever since reading Walk Two Moons in elementary school, I used to obsessively read her books. It has been awhile, but I am fully confident that this will have the quality I am used to experiencing with Creech’s writing.

Ironskin by Tina Connolly (unsolicited) – AHHH, the steampunk retelling of Jane Eyre. I’ve seen mixed reviews, so I guess mileage will vary but I’ll try and go in without a whole lot of expectations.

In case you skipped it or missed it, here’s a recap of what we’ve posted here last week:

Today I posted a long stewing review of The Wise Man’s Fear by Patrick Rothfuss and decide it’s more like a pair of Sketchers than a Prada backpack.

Remember that time I was enamored with Betty the duck from Floors? Well, Betty’s back in the sequel, 3 Below by Patrick Carmen which I utterly enjoyed.

One does ponder whether it’s possible to successfully Bloggiesta with a margarita?

I’m a little late to the Incarnate by Jodi Meadows party, but for the most part it was an okay read.

Allison thinks valkyries are totally kick ass and wholeheartedly recommends Valkyrie Rising by Ingrid Paulson.

That one time I blasted calories while reading The Boy Recession by Flynn Meany.

There’s TEN series that Allison shamefully has not finished yet.

In which Lish McBride dishes about her Necromancer series and you can win a copy of both books!

Okay, I am totally convinced the main character of Necromancing The Stone by Lish McBride is based on my boyfriend. FOR REALS.

As stupid as the Amish vs. vampires sounds, The Hallowed Ones by Laura Bickle is actually really wonderful.

Finally, I totally chose my own adventure with Batman: Super Villains Strike by Michael Teitelbaum.

  1. Great haul of books April. These all look awesome. I know what you mean about that handsome man on the cover. I like hot men on the cover of my books as well.

    Grace

  2. I can’t wait for you to read And Only to Deceive, and hopefully you like it enough to get to A Poisoned Season!! AHHHHH I LOVE THAT BOOK SO MUCH. It has, hands down, one of my all time favorite scenes ever.

I own Boy’s Life and haven’t read it…but my copy is used and has a gross stain on the back, so I totally just bought that ebook.

The Bastard! I really like the Kent Family Chronicles, I’ve only read the first few. I need to finish that series. John Jakes FTW.

  3. Ironskin looks SO good! I’m going to have to figure out how to get my hands on a copy stat. I hope you enjoy all you got 🙂

    Here’s my STS!

  4. I also snapped up Sweet Venom and Princess of Glass when I saw those sweet Kindle deals. Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow was also very cheap this month, so I’m on a bit of a Jessica Day George kick at the moment.

  5. Awesome books! I love Sharon Creech, so I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Great Unexpected. I also got Sweet Venom–you can’t go wrong when it’s free! Enjoy your books and good luck with Bloggiesta…sounds like you already got a lot done!

  6. Ironskin works so much better when you go in thinking that it’s a book by itself. And Sharon Creech! Yay!

  7. Yo, I know you love Deanna Raybourn’s Lady Julia Grey books, so you will LOVE the Tasha Alexander books. They’re really good. I’m very curious about Allison’s favorite scene, though! Might have to reread and see if I can guess it!
Also, I totally hopped on over to Amazon and bought The Bastard because HELLO it sounds amazing and I’ve always wanted to read it and HISTORICAL FICTION FOREVER.

  8. Haha. I think I do the opposite of you. I buy a book for my kindle, and then if I like it, I buy the physical copy.

I read Walk Two Moons a few years ago. I really liked it. But my favorite Sharon Creech books are Love That Dog, and Hate That Cat. Have you read them? I think they are marvelous. They are extremely quick reads.

The kids at the library where I work LOVE Sharon Creech. I definitely need to order her new book, because all the kids will be asking for it. I think the teachers at school must really talk about them

Have fun with your new books. 🙂

  9. Awesome books! I haven’t read any of these but I hope you enjoy them!

    My STS =)

  10. I also obsessively read every Sharon Creech book I could get my hands on after I read Walk Two Moons, which I believe was around 5th grade. At least I remember saying she was my favorite author in a report that year. Super jealous that you got a copy!

  11. HAHA congrats on Monday off, that is fanfreakingtastic!! And DUDE I have a finished copy of Sweet Evil yet that I haven’t read, what is wrong with us? It sounds legit. I might add it to my upcoming read before the end of 2012 list.

  12. Nice haul! Sometimes I hate not leaving in the US, because than I would have a free kindle copy of Sweet Venom! It’s on my wish list, so I’m just going to buy it :).

    Enjoy your new books!
    My StS

  13. I don’t think Ironskin is for me but I am intrigued by it and nice work this week, sounds like you deserve a paid day off! We get Monday off too because it’s a public holiday, woo!

  14. YAY for having Monday off!

I just found a new book via your IMM! I’m totally adding The Great Unexpected to my list of To Reads! I love that cover. Enjoy your goodies! Happy Reading!

  15. Ironskin sounds awesome! Hope you love it!

  16. Oooh, Ironskin. I started reading that, but got distracted by vacation, since I decided to only read physical copies during that time. I liked the first chapter though…

  17. Oooh, I love the cover for Ironskin! And I’ve heard that Sweet Venom is really good. Hope you enjoy all of these books 🙂 Happy reading!

  19. Awesome haul, April! Ironskin looks especially awesome.

  20. A new one by Sharon Creech?! I’ll definitely have to check that one out. 🙂

  21. I’ve had that Sharon Creech novel staring at me for quite some time. :-/ As you know, I also love love Walk Two Moons (but I did read Chasing Redbird and I didn’t love it as much… isn’t that the sequel?). So we shall see. I put it in a “special” bag to find while all this packing chaos is going on so while I wait to get a card for my new library… this will be one of the first on my list.

Hope you have a great week!

  22. Great selection of books! You just remind me that i have to read as well Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs (i have it to my bookself for a while but totally forgot about it oups!
