Pushing The Limits Katie McGarry Book Review

Ah, Pushing The Limits, you sly, seductive book, you. Y’all, based on the reviews I read beforehand, I kind of thought Pushing The Limits by Katie McGarry would be the sort of book I could background read. You know, pick it up and set it down while concentrating on other things. WRONG. This book had my full frontal attention, friends. While not a perfect book, I found that Katie McGarry’s characters had me in a total attention headlock.

Pushing The Limits

Echo Emerson is a straight A student with a rockin’ bod and ran with the popular crowd. The thing is, she’s carrying a deep secret and some heavy emotional scars, real dark stuff, guys. Noah is an orphan, in foster care. He’s definitely a screw up and not living to his full potential. Stakes are high for Noah though, because HE ALSO HAS SECRETS. Noah and Echo come together through a tutoring program as an extension of the pilot therapy program both are in. You all totally know what happens anytime a good girl tutors a bad boy! HOT AND HEAVY CHEMISTRY! WHOOO YEAH. Seriously, if I was ever a tutor, I would expect life to mirror fiction.

Frankly, I liked both of the point of view characters in Pushing The Limits. I liked Echo and her fragility, yet how she also shows strength through her quiet little defiances.  Noah complements her perfectly, in that he is so stubborn, but that stubbornness could easily be read as determination. Both characters push each other into being better people. At least, that is how I saw it. Sure, the characters were melodramatic and at moments, total teenagers to my annoyance, but YOU GUYS I found myself caring to the point of silent tears and utterly riveted.

The romance, the secrets, the WHAT HAPPENS NEXT OMGGGGGG kept me invested in Pushing The Limits. Y’all, I put off eating and screwing around on the interwebs to read this book. I know a lot of my friends didn’t love this one, but in all honesty, I’m kind of (read: A LOT) excited for the companion because I cannot wait for THE DRAMA and am all about being rivited and entertained and nice and mushy romantic scenes.

Disclosure: Received for review via Netgalley.

Comments

  1. I so glad you loved it too! It took me a little by surprise as well & I can definitely say that it is currently in the top 5 books of the year for me. 🙂

  2. Awesome review! I just got this one from NetGalley after hearing such great things about it and now I can’t wait to dig in. 🙂

  3. I really liked that we got to see both points of view. I think if I had just read Echo or Noah’s, that would have been the only character I liked whereas with the dual perspective, I liked both (for the most part-Noah is a little too bad for me).

  4. Glad you enjoyed it!
I recently finished and I found it quite an addictive read, it made me care for the characters 😀

  5. I just finished it too and I loved it also. Seriously loved Noah. <3

  6. I loved this one! All that chemistry! It was impossible to put down.

  7. Glad you liked this one! I’m just getting read to start it myself. Thanks for the encouragement! 😀

  8. Haha, I liked it and I feel no shame! The characters made it work. There was definitely some mushiness, but the issues in it were great and, other than the mushy lines and overuse of ‘baby,’ I thought McGarry’s writing was great.

    Plus, rollercoaster of EMOTIONS.

  9. It’s like ‘pushing the limits’ week and i am closer and closer to throwing this book in my overnight bag for our weekend wedding trip. Oh gee.

  10. I was surprised by how much I liked this one! It doesn’t really seem like my type of story but the chemistry in this book was off the charts. I thought Echo & Noah complemented each other perfectly too. I just wanted everything to work out for them!

  11. I absolutely adored this book as well! Great review April! What did you think of the counselor?

  12. I just a copy of this one for review. I’ll be curious to see how I wind up liking it. You know how you talk about this being a possible background book? I was considering doing that with SECOND CHANCE SUMMER but am totally sucked in, so I can relate to what you are talking about.

  13. I’m happy you enjoyed this April and that you could connect so much with Echo and Noah, I feel like I missed something while reading this!

  14. So glad to see you enjoyed this, April! It has been really interesting to see everyone’s take on this book. I really enjoyed it because, as you mentioned, the issues were dark and deep. I liked that they had to grow and develop. The slow reveal of figuring out all the facts was also great – sometimes that bothers me when things are inching along, but I really enjoyed it here. 🙂

  15. You can basically feel the heat pouring off of that cover.

  16. I wasn’t too hot on the romance, but I absolutely ADORED the characters. Echo and Noah were both so broken, yet they transformed from the beginning to the end of the novel and I love that!

  17. I freakin loved this book. I BLEW through it. I’m really surprised that some people aren’t liking it. It’s completely HarlequinTeen material, and I think some people are expecting different pubs. But NO! This is what they put out and I loved the heck out of it. I’m excited about the companion book but honestly, I could keep reading about Noah and Echo because I found myself caring about them as well. And also the swoons, I liked those.

  18. A heart-wrenching YA book about two broken teens struggling to put the shattered pieces of their lives back together and finding love along the way.
