10 Late Bloomers Of 2012 YA Debuts

You guys, it took me like FOREVER to think of a name for today’s Top Ten Tuesday. I decided to focus on YA books that are debuting in the later part of 2012 (July-December) because I feel like this is the part of the year where we start to think about 2013 books and sometimes it’s like these later debuts are left by the wayside because we’re all getting excited about next year instead of stopping to get pumped about this year.

Does that make sense? I do not even know.

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke And Bookish.

10 Debuts Coming Out From July-December 2012 That I Am TOTALLY Anticipating:

1. Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff (September)

Why?: Yo, this book has a Patrick Rothfuss cover blurb, which I totally respect. ALSO. That cover. And steampunk Japan? Sign me up please.

2. Touching The Surface by Kimberly Sabatini (October)

Touching The Surface

Why?: I’ve met Kimberly a few times at book signings and she comes off as a very genuine warm person. And okay, also the summary says: “When Elliot finds herself dead for the third time, she knows she must have messed up, big-time.” AFTERLIFE GUYS! AHHH!

3. Meant To Be by Lauren Morrill (November)

Meant To Be

Why?: Apparently this one feels similar to Anna And The French Kiss, and y’all, I’m going to chase that feeling. Also I know people who have read and enjoyed it, whose opinions I trust.

4. Summer And Bird by Katherine Catmull (October)

Why?: I am cheating a little because this is middle grade, but friends BIRDS! And missing parents! And siblings. And again, an utterly timeless cover.

5. Ironskin by Tina Connolly (October)

6. Crewel by Gennifer Albin (October)

Crewel Gennifer Albin Book Cover

Why?: So the main character has magic where she can control lives by weaving things. How freakin’ cool is that? But then she wants to rebel against that. Bro, I am all in.

7. What’s Left Of Me by Kat Zhang (September)

  1. I definitely feel overwhelmed by all of the 2013 covers and synopses we’re seeing-there are still so many 2012 releases I want to get to! I want to read almost all of the ones you listed especially Meant to Be!

  2. Let me tell you that most of this list is going on my TBR shelf. Awesome picks! Esp. Venom and Meant To Be. I’m down for any novel that has that Anna and The French Kiss feeling!

  3. I have been antsy for “What’s Left of Me” since the first time I saw the cover. SO. COOL.

I can’t believe what a cover whore I’m turning into, but I’m loving the cover of Crewel too.

They all sound great and perfect topic. I’ve been in a book slump lately so it’s good to here about the new stuff coming out!

  4. STORMDANCER AND IRONSKIN!!!! I’m SO incredibly excited for both of those. **Dances** I want them NOW!!!! πŸ™‚

  5. I think I had only heard of two or three of these before but now you got me looking into several others!
    πŸ˜€
    Thanks for sharing this list

  6. Valeria Andrea says

Oh, yes! That makes all the sense in the world, jaja. Was thinking about that myself, & discovered there are LOTS of books coming very soon.

  7. Krazzyme says

All of them look awesome and I can personally say that Defiance is AMAZING

    Krazyyme @ Young Readers

  8. I am excited about Stormdancer too. I didn’t realize that Ironskin is a retelling of Jane Eyre.

The debut I am looking forward to (in addition to Stormdancer) is Falling Kingdoms.

  9. I’ve read WHAT’S LEFT OF ME and CREWEL – both are well-written and interesting. I definitely wanted more world-building in WHAT’S LEFT OF ME, but I thought the writing style was pretty and the society was very much Golden Compass-esque… I sometimes had trouble gauging when it was set (i.e. alt history “today”? the future?), but I overally enjoyed it. Plus the author was only 18 or 19 when she wrote it!

I am excited for IRONSKIN. The debut I am most looking forward to is MEANT TO BE – Lauren is as cute and nice as her book looks. I’m hoping it is similar to ANNA&The FRENCH KISS, too!

    Nice to meet you April!

I also participated in this week’s top ten: http://rachelwritesthings.blogspot.com/2012/07/top-ten-books-youd-like-to-see-made.html

  10. I’m looking forward to all of these book releases <3

  11. I’m really looking forward to Defiance. There are so many good books I can’t wait to come out before 2012 ends (27 to be exact), but most of them aren’t debuts.

  12. This is a great idea. Thanks for sharing. I’ve added most of these to my TBR list. I especially like the sound of Meant to Be- anything that is similar to Anna and the French Kiss is a must read for me.

  13. Deb Nance at Readerbuzz says

Great list! It’s hard to keep track of books that are not out yet. Sometimes I completely miss them.

    Please stop by!

  14. This entire list makes me drool like an idiot. Like you have no idea. I got lucky; I ended up with Ironskin, What’s Left of Me, Defiance and Meant to Be for review! πŸ˜€ Thanks for stopping by!

  15. Meant to Be, April, is so freakin’ good. Like I really enjoyed the maturity of the characters and there was a ton of humor involved. The MC was super uptight which made things even better. READ IT SOON!

I’m looking forward to reading Crewel and Through to You so much. Bring on the awesome!

  16. MEANT TO BE is so going to be mine! I could make a bad pun here, but I feel to desperate to read it. :’D

    Patricia // My Post

  17. How did I not know that Ironskin was a Jane Eyre retelling?!?!?!?!?! I wanted it before, but now I’d like seriously get in a fight for it. Like a nerd fight. Punch someone out with my rampant knowledge of books or something. lol.

  18. Ironskin HOLLAAAA!!!!!! I am so stoked on that one!! And Defiance!!! AWESOME list lady, I’m looking forward to ALL OF THESE!

    Anna @ Literary Exploration

  19. I am looking forward to Stormdancer, Ironskin, and Defiance. πŸ˜€

  20. Fantastic books! That’s a shame if they barely get noticed because of the 2013 hype because some of these seem like my kind of thing. Stormdancer and Touching the Surface especially. Dead for the third time? That’s already hooking me in.

  21. I am so excited for Ironskin – I’m a fan of Jane Eyre, so I’m curious to see how this retelling will be.

    Fabulous list!

  22. Uh, ditto. I want to read every single book on this list. Thanks for adding to my tbr list πŸ™‚

  23. Great list! I have Venom sitting at home and I am DYING to read it!!!

  24. Dang, I would read Meant To Be just for its cover. The Anna and the French Kiss comparisons seal the deal!

  25. I’m really excited for What’s Left of Me! Crewel is pretty high up on my wishlist, too. I hadn’t heard of Touching the Surface and Meant to Be but I’m totally going to look them up and add them to my to-read list now πŸ˜€ Great selection!

  26. A few of these are already on my TBR list. Others I hadn’t heard of. Thanx for sharing them! Luv the cover of Venom, btw! πŸ˜‰

  27. Wow, I hadn’t heard of alot of these- thanks for sharing! I can’t wait to get my hands on What’s Left of Me, and Meant to Be sounds like a good one, too.

  28. Yeah, that blurb is precisely why I want to read STORMDANCER. I also picked up CREWEL and SUMMER AND BIRD at ALA. Very excited to read those.

  29. This was such a good list. I got approved for a copy of Defiance on Edelweiss and I plan on starting it once I’m done with Something Strange and Deadly. Can’t wait to do so!

I’m absolutely dying to read Crewel and Venom as well! Nice list. At least half of these are on my TBR list.

  30. Such a wonderful choice for Top Ten Picks for today! I am going to add stuff from here!

Here is my Top Ten post!

  31. Seriously. So excited for some of these. What’s Left of Me, Through to You, Crewel. Sound awesome.

Check mine out πŸ™‚ Top Ten Books To Keep You Up All Night!

  32. You make a good point that sometimes books that arrive late in the year are overlooked. But I am really looking forward to some of these! Especially Touching the Surface – and Summer and Bird looks wonderful.

  33. Oh wow! Ironskin looks amazing! Thanks! Hadn’t heard of that one

  34. You just reminded me of the agony that is my never-ending TBR list πŸ˜› I’m so excited for Stormdancer for the same reasons you already mentioned! And Venom – masquerade Venice setting, yum ^^ And I had totally forgotten about Ironskin! I love me some Jane Eyre too πŸ˜‰

  35. I’m pretty much adding all these to my TBR lists – I love how you included a “why” for each of them. How have I not heard of these yet??? (except for Crewel). Love the Jane Eyre/steampunkish one! Just finished a Persuasion retelling in YA-dystopian fashion, For Darkness Shows the Stars, Diana Peterfreund. Very VERY good.

  36. Great picks! Especially Meant to Be, Through to You, and What’s Left of Me … all look amazing!

  37. I agree with you; I hadn’t realized this was true until now and I LOVE all the choices on your list! Great topic April!

  38. You came up with an AWESOME idea for this week’s TTT. Personally, I’m looking forward to Venom, Ironskin and Stormdancer! They sound absolutely great.

  39. These look great. I love the cover for Meant to Be. I got a few of these a BEA but haven’t read them yet. Great list.

  40. Great top ten! I am really looking forward to Stormdancer and Touching the Surface.

  41. I completely agree! A lot of people end up focusing on 2013. And I had the privilege of being able to read VENOM early (I went to BEA – I actually introduced myself to you at the Hyperion booth but you may not remember) and it is like my dream book. And Kim? She is SO AWESOME. I can’t WAIT for TOUCHING THE SURFACE! I completely agree with all your choices and can’t wait to read them! I did my freebie on top sensations I associate with books. This is a great post! πŸ™‚
    -Grace

  42. Yes, I understood that. I’ve felt the same way! It’s also slightly annoying that challenges don’t really let you focus on these later books because you want to pick the ones with covers already when you’re making your lists, right? Am I the only one who does that?

Anyway, I am SUPA excited for all the Breathless Reads (except Origin, IDK why), Summer and Bird (TIMELESS COVERS and Gail Carson Levine-reminiscence!), and Through to You!

  43. Such good books on this list! My grades are going to plummet when I head back to university…

  44. Meant to Be and Through to You both look really good! And I can’t wait to read them.

Top Ten: Favorite Declarations of Love in YA

  45. Thanks for visiting Jorie’s Reads.

I like your take on todays TTT, too.

  46. So many pretty covers. Sensory overload. πŸ™‚

  47. You have basically sandwiched this post with 2 of my most anticipated books! Stormdancer and Defiance! Badass Babes? Bring it!

  48. I’m totally going to look out for Defiance – I love the cover.

  49. Interesting Top 10 Tuesday topic! I really like it.

Meant to Be looks really good! Love the cover and the fact that you said it’s suppose to be like Anna and the French Kiss sold me!!

Thanks for stopping by my top ten earlier! πŸ™‚

  50. Great list! I’m also dying to read all of these. Thankfully I get to read Meant to Be in the next month or so. It looks so good…or that might just be because of the cover, but still. πŸ™‚

    Thanks for stopping by!

Taking It one Page at a Time

  51. I think most of these are already in my TBR-pile. But I’m really looking foward to Defiance and Crewel. I really liked Jane Eyre so I’ll have to check out Ironskin. And I’m amazed by how beautiful a lot of the covers are.

  52. Summer and Bird is Middle Grade? Say what now? Kudos for unconventional marketing then – with that cover and that title it reminds me of literary fiction.

  53. These are all awesome. Special mention to the Kristoff for your reasons, which are also mine, especially YES the Rothfuss blurb which is how I came to know about the book. And by the way, I finished The Name of the Wind yesterday after spending so much time making sweet reading love to it since February. I will NEVER EVER be the same. Best recommendation I have ever received in my life.

Oh yeah, FANTASTIC topic for a list. And great list.

  54. Gah, all these books are on my TBR list, April! I just received Stormdancer a couple of days ago and I am STOKED. Looking most forward to Crewel, Defiance (because C.J. Redwine is a HOOT) and Meant to Be:) Great list!

  55. Meant To Be sounds so good, and the colours on the cover are so pretty!

I need to read WhatÒ€ℒs Left Of Me NOW! It sounds so good and ASDFGHJKL. Also, I’ve been seeing it around a lot, with people gushing… Must be worth it.

Great topic, April! It took me forever to think of something, too [so I ended up stealing an old topic :P].<3

  56. I can personally vouch for Defiance (oh how I love that book) and Through to You.

  57. Haha, I do see here that you enjoy your PNR! I can always count on book bloggers to show me books that I never would have picked up on my own or even heard about…What’s Left of Me sounds really interesting! Great list.

  58. Through To You looks absolutely fantastic! I seriously can’t wait for it πŸ˜€
