Books Into Movies? YES PLEASE: Top Ten Tuesday

Hey everyone, it’s Allison!

I’m going to be doing this weeks Top Ten Tuesday for Good Books and Good Wine. I volunteered to do it this week to give April a bit of a break and to actually have the opportunity to do something a little different for a change. As always Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke And The Bookish and was created by The Perpetual Page Turner.

Top 10 Books You’d Like To See Made Into A Movie

1. The Rose series by Jennifer Donnelly (The Tea Rose, The Winter Rose, and The Wild Rose)

The Rose Series by Jennifer Donnelly

The Rose Series by Jennifer Donnelly

I LOVE the Rose series by Jennifer Donnelly. Admittedly I still have to read The Wild Rose but I think I keep putting it off because I don’t want the series to end. It is  SO good! Sweeping drama, romance, historical settings, strong characters, and plenty of twists and turns. I would love to see what Hollywood could do to this series by making it into a movie (or a series of movies).

2) Across the Universe by Beth Revis

Across The UniverseÂ

When I was reading Across the Universe, I could literally feel myself picturing the scenery of Godspeed and their concept of Earth and there were times when I wondered what it would look like on the big movie screen. Can you imagine it? I for one think it would be so awesome!

3) Beauty Queens by Libba Bray

Beauty Queens

When I was reading Beauty Queens, I was literally trying to cast the movie in my head. Not only did I LOVE the book with all of its wonderful satire, over-the-top characters, and serious critiques of race, gender, sexuality, capitalism, and the concept of beauty in America but, I also wanted it to be made into a movie right away. It would definitely be a movie that I would pay to go see.

4)  Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly

Revolution

Drama + historical fiction + music + time travel + Jennifer Donnelly’s amazing writing ability = the perfect combination for an awesome movie.  I’d definitely go see it. Also, can you imagine how heart pumping the sound track would be?

5) Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

Anna Dressed In Blood, Kendare Blake, Book COver

Anna Dressed In Blood

Who doesn’t want to see a movie with a homicidal ghost with a secret? Or a movie where the ghost killer is so intrigued by the ghost that he isn’t if he should kill her or not? I’ll admit usually I’m not one for scary movies but, I really think that Anna Dressed in Blood would make for a kick-ass horror/syfy movie!

6) Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys

Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Septys, Book Cover

Between Shades Of Gray

Before reading Between Shades of Gray, I never knew much about what life was like for someone who was deported to Siberia for being anti-Soviet or an enemy of the people. I think that this is a part of history that is often glossed over and never really discussed. That is why I think not only is Between Shades of Gray a truly excellent book but, I also think it would make a really good movie because it would help educate people and potentially open their eyes to something that they had never heard of before.

7) The Gemma Doyle trilogy by Libba Bray (A Great and Terrible Beauty, Rebel Angels, and The Sweet Far Thing)

Gemma Doyle Trilogy

Gemma Doyle Trilogy

I know that at one point there were rumors a movie version for this trilogy but unfortunately they didn’t pan out. I still can’t understand why! I think this would be the perfect movie — a Victorian setting mixed with Gothic fantasy and mystery and a dash of sass to boot. Awesome!

8) Titanic: The Long Night by Diane Hoh

Titanic: The Long Night

Another Titanic movie? Yes please! This has always been one of my favorite YA books about the Titanic. I can remember the first time I read it and found myself caught up in the actions of the characters of Elizabeth, Max, Katie, Paddy, and Brian, and I think it would translate really well to a movie setting.

9)  Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

Firefly Lane

Firefly Lane was the first Kristin Hannah book that I read and I think that it would make a really good heart-felt movie about the trials and tribulations of friendship. Also if done properly it would be one of those movies you would need to prepare for by having a box of tissues with you.

10) The Rescue by Nicholas Sparks

The Rescue

The Rescue was the first Nicholas Sparks book that I read that I really wanted to see translated onto the movie scene, and it is one that still hasn’t been which is disappointing to me.  Every time a new Nicholas Sparks related movie comes out, I keep asking myself ‘and where is The Rescue?’. For me, it has all the right elements (including a sweet romance) which would make for a really good movie if done properly.

What do you want to see on the big screen? Do you think any of my picks would make a particularly good movie? Let me know!

Comments

  1. I admit, I haven’t gotten through Between Shades of Grey. I tried to read it, and it was so sad, so painful, that I just had to put it away until I’m in a better place. One day I’ll read it, and I can tell it will break my heart, but I can’t do it yet!

I want to see The Night Circus in film.

  2. I’d totally go to a midnight release of Anna Dressed in Blood!! And I’m with you – how has Beauty Queens NOT been made into a movie???

I’m afraid we have to agree to disagree on The Rescue *lol* There are just too many Nicholas Sparks movies for me…

Check out my Top Ten / Teaser Tuesday!

  3. It’s been a while since I read the Gemma Doyle trilogy, but it would make me very happy if this series was made into a movie. I finished Between Shades of Gray a few weeks ago and I fell in love with it. It would make a fantastic movie!

The other books I haven’t read/hard about, but they all sound interesting enough. 🙂

  4. Between Shades of Gray would be so heartbreaking and beautiful. I still need to read a bunch of these! Great choices.

  5. You have quite a few books on the list that I have been meaning to read: Across the Universe, Anna Dressed in Blood, Between Shades of Grey… guess I need to get on that ASAP 🙂

  6. I haven’t read many of these books, but wow! I’d go see all those movies! I’d love to see the Gemma Doyle Trilogy made into a movie… or at least the first book. It would be kind of epic… And Yes! to The Rescue; it’s honestly the only Nicholas Sparks book I’ve read, but I like the fact that no one dies in the end. 🙂

  7. Aaaagh, haven’t read many of these but I WANT TO. But from what I’ve heard, they’d make fantastic movies. I’d really be curious about bringing the Gemma Doyle books to the big screen…

  8. I came oh-so-close to putting the Gemma Doyle books on my list too, Allison! SO CLOSE!!

And YES to Across The Universe. I could totally picture that book and the follow-up as movies in my head while I was reading so OF COURSE I’d want to see them if they were real movies!

    Great list!

(Also, I’ve not read any Jennifer Donnelly. Clearly you love her. As does everyone else that reads besides me. I am very far behind. *sigh*)

  9. Hi Allison! Yes, every Nicholas Sparks book ever should be made into a movie. I don’t want to READ them, but I do want to look at the pretty actors and cry a little when they become movies.

  10. Every single one of these lists, including mine, has included Across the Universe. Does Hollywood need a better sign that it would be popular?

I totally almost put Beauty Queens on my list. It would be so FUNNY.

Also, so much love for the Rose series. I’ve only read The Tea Rose so far, but it was so good.

  11. I haven’t read any Sparks books, but after seeing the trailer for The Lucky One I was like “Can Zac Efron be in all of these movies please.”

  12. I have Anna Dressed in Blood on my shelf and I really need to find time to read it! It sounds so good! Thanks for sharing. My Top Ten & Teaser Tuesday

  13. Listening to Revolution on audiobook and LOVING it. 🙂 I could definitely see this being made into a movie – I would watch it, for sure!

  14. Yes! The Jennifer Donnelly books would all be fabulous movies, particularly the Rose trilogy. They could get some fantastic Irish and English actors and actresses to play all the roles. I’m thinking Gerard Butler would make a fabulous Sid Malone. And maybe Kate Winslet as India?

  15. I LOVE that so many of us have Across the Universe on our lists! I also agree with Between Shades of Gray (not to be confused with that other Gray book…) Thanks for sharing!!

  16. Definitely read The Recue way back in the day, too. It was a good one. I swear all his books-to-movies make me bawl like a baby. (Hence the reason I didn’t go see The Lucky One yesterday w/ my hubs… I wasn’t in a crying mood. Ha!)

  17. Ditto to Across the Universe and Titanic: The Long Night! I think you’re the only other person out there who has read this book (besides me)! I absolutely LOVED it! I reread it for part of the Titanic 2012 Reading Challenge and fell in love with the characters all over again.

  18. Great list! I’ve heard of a number of them but I haven’t gotten around to reading any of them (yet).

Here’s my TTT for this week: http://www.rulethewaves.net/blog/?p=4408

  19. I also chose Anna Dressed in Blood as one of my choices! I think it would make for an awesome scary movie!

  20. Across the Universe would make an awesome movie!

  21. I’m sure The Rescue will be made eventually. Especially if the Sparks movie adaptations continue to do so well.

  22. Cool list! I haven’t actually read any of these books yet but I have Between Shades of Grey at home and I’m looking forward to reading it!

  23. Oh, I love Beauty Queens. The audio version with Libba Bray narrating is hilarious. I could see it making a fantastic movie, if done right. But isn’t that the way it goes with all books made into movies…

  24. I put Jennifer Donnelly’s A Northern Light on my list, but I was so close to including The Tea Rose and The Winter Rose. Those books rock! With all their drama and intrigue, I think they’d be such wonderful movies. I own the third book but haven’t read for two reasons. One, like you, I don’t want them to end. And two, I am convinced that I MUST re-read the first two before continuing on to the third. Now I can’t stop thinking about them becoming movies. SUCH A GREAT IDEA!
