Make Me Lose My Breath: Breathless Reads Re-Cap plus GIVEAWAY

Peeps, if you get the chance to ever attend a Breathless Reads Tour YOU SHOULD GO! Seriously there is nothing more kick ass than young adult authors.

Breathless Tour Everyone

From the left: Me, Andrea Cremer, Jamie, Jessica Spotswood, Beth Revis, April from Sim-Sational Books, Marie Lu, Jena from Shortie Says

By hook or by crook, YOU SHOULD GO. I know, I get a little repetitive with that. On February 18th, I kidnapped my little sister and drove the four hours to Collegeville, PA just to go to this book signing. Interesting things we saw along the way: The Great Wall of PA Turnpike, Pay-to-Potty, the most sketchy gas station in Upstate NY, and an abandoned shopping plaza.

Upon arriving at the Towne Bookstore, I immediately spotted Jamie from the Perpetual Page Turner and ran over to say HEYYYYY GIRL! AND OMG sitting in front of her was April from Sim-Sational Books and it was so FREAKIN AWESOME to meet her for the very first time EVAR and you guys it was her very first book signing and SHE IS SO COOL. And then I also got to meet Jena from Shortie-Says who is so ridiculously adorable and pretty you guys have no idea. After introductions and chatting we had to sit down and listen to this moderator and the authors. You guys I totally TOOK NOTES so I could report back to you, but I didn’t write everything down because partway through I got really REALLY hungry and started thinking about food and zoning out.

Breathless Tour Andrea Creamer

Left to right: Andrea Cremer, Me, Jamie, Jen

BUT HERE ARE COOL THINGS I LEARNED AND NOW YOU WILL LEARN ABOUT THE BREATHLESS AUTHORS:

Andrea Cremer read a lot of David Eddings and JRR Tolkien as a kid. Awesome taste yo.

Jessica Spotswood based her book, Born Wicked, on the concept of strong independent girls in a society that doesn’t value them.

Beth Revis  loves books with a fantastical setting, but felt a sci-fi setting was the best way to tell her story.

Marie Lu grew up reading fantasy and sci-fi, because she is totally cool. She always wanted to write about a teenage criminal who was a good guy, much like Jean Valjean in Les Miserables.

According to Beth Revis, truckers really like her sci-fi book, as she discovered after the audiobook of Across The Universe was on the books channel on XM radio. (Sidebar: I have XM, um yo HOW DID I NOT KNOW THEY BROADCAST AUDIOBOOKS).

80% of Andrea Creamer’s readers are girls. She really loves writing the sexy times and fighting scenes.

Marie Lu totally got some bonus points because she said she was obsessed with Game Of Thrones and really liked Ready Player One.

Beth Revis is into Castle and Firefly and Dr. Who. (Sidebar: I wonder if she is a Nathan Fillion fan?)

Jessica Spotswood showed that SHE TOO has taste as she enjoys Downton Abbey, Revenge, and the Graceling series.

Andrea Cremer loves Buffy and is a total Joss Whedon fan girl.

Andrea Creamer said her story is done before the fans see it. She said the characters believe they are real and that she cried while writing her book.

Jessica Spotswood is focused on the characters and what they want and what is stopping them from what they want. She mentioned honesty and consequences.

Beth Revis pretty much won the panel by saying that she laughs wickedly after killing her characters.

Marie Lu tries to read reviews every now and then to see what readers are thinking. She also likes getting to know other writers and finds social media is great in reaching out to other writers and getting advice from other writers.

OH and also ahhhh, Beth Revis mentioned that her next project is going to be The Birds meets Game Of Thrones, and you guys I literally wrote in my notes for this ‘OH FUCK YES!!”

And now, since you’ve read like 600 words of me rambling about Breathless Reads Tour, I have a reward for one lucky reader.

A signed paperback of Across The Universe by Beth Revis

and an unsigned ARC (because I suck and forgot to bring it) of Legend by Marie Lu

  1. Beth Ravis may be my new favourite person.

I have Across the Universe (library copy) sitting on my table begging to be read.

  2. It’s so exciting to meet authors like that. I wish I was able to break away from the nest and fly away on my own to go to all these fabulous signings. What I wouldn’t give to meet Jessica Spotswood in particular. And I STILL haven’t read Legend but I STILL totally want to.

The Birds + Game of Thrones? Revis certainly has quite the imagination, lol.

    Ò€” Asher

  3. Book signings sound so exciting! I’m enjoying all the Whedon/Fillion/Game of Thrones love that seems to have taken place =D

  4. WOW! I wish I could go. I was lucky to meet Andrea Cremer when she was in Italy. She’s a great author! >_<
Fantastic post! And thank you for the awesome giveaway! πŸ˜€

  8. Wow! What an awesome time! I wish I could have made it to one of the tour stops, but there was not one close by. πŸ™

I’ve read every book on the tour and loved them all! They are great books!

  9. Thanks for recapping for those of us who haven’t attended a tour stop! (Publishers, send your authors near me, please?)

I’m looking forward to Patriot (Legend #2) in September 2012 and Shades of Earth (Across the Universe #3) in January 2013. πŸ™‚

  10. Wow – it sounds like it was an amazing time! I’m really looking forward to reading Born Wicked … especially after hearing Jessica Spotswood loves Revenge just as much as I do. πŸ™‚

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  11. Oh wow, you’re so lucky to be able to meet up with authors like that πŸ™‚ Born Wicked and Across the Universe are up at the top of my wishlist so I am super jealous!

  12. Yay! I like potentially being rewarded for reading random tidbits and facts about authors and bloggers I like. πŸ˜›

It’s a hard knock life. And Breathless Reads looks pretty much awesome and full of good times.

  13. I always want to go to these tours, but they never stop anywhere near me…oh well, at least there are awesome people like you who share the info, run giveaways, and basically just let me live vicariously through you. πŸ˜› haha

I already knew a bit of the stuff you shared, at least about Beth Revis. I follow her tumblr and she’s posted about being a Browncoat before. πŸ˜› So, yes, yes she is a Nathan Fillion fan. πŸ˜‰ haha

Thanks for the giveaway, April, and for sharing the event with us. πŸ˜€

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  17. You are SO lucky to have met them! I live in Australia, and unfortunately not many authors visit here (that I know of).

  18. I’m so jealous! We never get author events or book tours where I live!

Jessica Spotwood DOES have good taste – Revenge, Downton Abbey and I love Graceling series! ( she also likes TVD *fist pump*

  21. Mary Preston says

This was fabulous to read through thank you.

The Birds meets Game Of Thrones – I’m in.

    Sensational giveaway.

  22. Not commenting for the contest..

It was so awesome meeting you. I’m so glad you drive down. Lol at the turnpike walls and shady potty. We almost pulled into that same shopping center. I still have to write up my post, I have been distracted.

This being my first signing, I have to say it will forever be my favorite.. and you ladies really made it awesome. I was so nervous to meet other bloggers, but you all made me feel so welcome… so thank you. It was so fun πŸ™‚ Looking foward to seeing you at future events.. maybe next time I’ll make the 3 hour drive up your way!

  23. OMG! The tour sounds amazing! πŸ˜€ Seems like you had a great time and I’m so jealous of you for meeting up with Jamie! It’s times like these that I wish I lived in the US. Or that plane tickets were cheaper. Either really πŸ™‚
Anyway, thank you so much for the giveaway!!

  24. Born Wicked is about “strong and independent girls in a society that doesn’t value them?” I’d love to read it. I like my books with a side of feminism.

  25. This sounds like so much fun! The Birds + Game of Thrones sounds very very interesting, I can’t wait for it.

  26. I’ve never been to a signing before. FAIL. But Lauren Oliver is coming to Raleigh on Sunday and I’m considering kidnapping a friend a couple of towns over and making her go with me. But I haven’t actually read the books yet. FAIL. And I’m so nervous! DOUBLE FAIL. I just don’t know what to do with myself.

Beth Revis gets mad points in my opinion for spending time at NC State University. Or at least mentioning it in Across the Universe.

WAIT. WHAT? Audiobooks on XM? How is that even fair? Somebody has been holding out on us. Let’s start a revolution.

  27. I’m am so incredibly jealous of you. The tour stopped by where I live, but it was on a school night! Gaaaaah. >.< I missed Pitch Dark, too, because I forgot about it. Two awesome tours in the span of one week- both missed!

    Anyways, done complaining.

Glad you had a great time! ^^

  47. I am so inordinately jealous of anyone who got to go to this tour, it sounds like it was so much fun! After reading so many bloggers’ recaps, I’m fairly certain Beth Revis is my favourite person ever. I mean, I would totally laugh with her after she kills off characters. Also, the more accurate thing would be of course she likes Nathan Fillion because who doesn’t?!

    Thanks for doing the giveaway!

  48. Catherine S. says

I’d love to go to a book signing like that! But unfortunately, I live international where the authors wouldn’t think twice to go to.

Thank you SO much for the giveaway! πŸ™‚

  49. Aw, you are so lucky! I wish i could go to a book tour. Nearly all the authors i like live in America ):

  50. Ooooh, I’d love either the ARC of Legend or the signed copy of Across the Universe.

  51. You’re so lucky! I’ve never been to a signing as not many authors come here!
