Friends With Boys Faith Erin Hicks Book Review

You know how I am BIG on characterization? Friends With Boys by Faith Erin Hicks has characterization in spades. I fell in love with almost every character, except the volleyball team douchebags. But, seriously, if you like your characters well drawn (see what I did there) pick up Friends With Boys by Faith Erin Hicks.

Friends With Boys

Maggie is the youngest of four, with three older brothers. She’s been home schooled all her life. When her mom leaves the family, Maggie must go to high school for the first time. Her older brothers have all been through high school before, and it’s a rite of passage for Maggie to go alone on her first day. I loved reading and seeing Maggie make her first real female friend – a nonconformist named Lucy who is super friendly and fan girly and AWESOME.

Plus you guys the relationship between Maggie and her bros is a huge component of why Friends With Boys by Faith Erin Hicks is so good! Maggie’s oldest brother is like a confidant and kind and funny and I wish he was my older brother. You guys will love him when you read about him. Her other brothers are twins who are always fighting, but love each other in the end. I loved seeing how Maggie’s family all have each other’s backs.

ALSO! Maggie is haunted by a ghost – not a nutty one like in Anya’s Ghost, but still, that just adds to the cool factor. Especially the end which has a bit to do with the ghost, but really the most important part of the end of Friends With Boys is that I really actually smiled.

The paranormal level of Friends With Boys by Faith Erin Hicks is very light so if you are more of a contemporary person anyways, you need to read this! Seriously, it’s worth reading for the zombie musical. OH YEAH, I and perked your attention with that I bet. But I won’t elaborate and instead will urge you to just go ahead and read Friends With Boys, if you are anything like me you won’t regret picking up this awesome graphic novel.

  1. The cover makes it look like a graphic novel…and I just saw in the tags that it totally is a graphic novel. I just answered my own question…

    Great review April!

  2. Wait… a zombie musical? A ZOMBIE MUSICAL?! Will be reading this one ASAP. My mom had 3 brothers and it’s always interesting to hear her stories about them growing up. I always wanted older brothers (sadly just have a younger one) so I’m always intrigued by stories about girls with older brothers.

    • Oh, you will LOVE Friends With Boys then. her older brothers are totally awesome. ANd yes, there is a Zombie musical and it IS AWESOME!

There’s lots of awesome in Friends With Boys, basically.

  3. Confession Time: I have never read a graphic novel.
But this? Makes me want to! Zombie musicals? Close to older brothers? (I always wanted older brothers growing up – so I love books where I can pretend I’m the main character and have older brothers! Yes, I’m a nerd.)

    • You should totally read a graphic novel, they are such a great form of story telling.

And yes, her older brothers are so awesome.

I never had older brothers either, but always wanted some.

  4. I would never have expected a ghost to make an appearance in this book, for some reason. Still, love me some ghosts. The brothers sound wicked awesome (I love mine but he’s more of a quiet gamer-geek than Maggie’s bros).

And aren’t there always douches of some breed in contemporary YA? I love seeing them get their comeuppance (I hope they do, in some small way at least).

  5. Yay comics! As someone who doesn’t have cool older brothers, and y’know, being a graphic novel totally makes me want to read this book. And Faith Erin Hicks makes me laugh on Twitter, too. And YUPSIREE my ears totally perked up at zombie musical! Hoping to dig into this one very soon.

  6. …And now I’m wondering why I was such a fool as not to request this on NetGalley. Dang! My library probably doesn’t have it. There goes that!

  7. Just ordered this one =) Sooo looking forward to it!

Loved Anya’s Ghost, I hope I will love this one as much =)
