The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight Jennifer E. Smith Book Review

It’s funny how life can change in four minutes, or at least how Hadley’s did. In The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith, Hadley is four minutes late for the plane to her father’s wedding in London. Yet, this is NOT the tragedy it seems, because she’s put on the next flight out in seat 18A. Seat 18C is taken by a charming British boy named Oliver.

The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight

Taking place over 24 hours, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith is told in present tense. I think this makes the book stand out from the contemporary crowd as this is something different. The compacted time line allows us to get to the heart of Jennifer E. Smith’s book – love.

Hadley’s conflicted about her dad and we readers are party to her memories and feelings. She wants very much to hate him for breaking up the family, but she can’t. You know, she is human and emotions are complicated. Meanwhile, Oliver is dealing with issues of his own – that we get bare bones glimpses of. AND OF COURSE there is also love at first sight between Oliver and Hadley.

You see, Oliver is my FAVORITE type of love interest. He’s not a dick. He can keep banter up and I loved his whole back and fourth with Hadley and the easy conversation they had. Because you guys, being able to hold a decent conversation in a relationship is way more important in life than if he is a dangerous bad boy rebel. Shocking I know. ALSO Oliver is kind and nice. He’s got a British accent and a sense of humor. He is definitely swoon worthy and if you liked St. Clair, you’ll definitely be down for Oliver.

I liked how The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith was deeper than it looked. It’s not some breezy, frivolous romance (not that there is anything wrong with those) but about growing up and accepting and loving people for who they are, despite their imperfections. I love the bits about realizing your parents are not perfect people, but have their own lives.

The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight was an excellent book to ring in the New Year with. I thought reading it helped me to begin 2012 on a great note. I hope that the other contemporary read I read this year are just as engaging, excellent, multilayered and swoony of a read as The Statistical Probability Of Love At First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith.

  1. First Angie and then you?! This is not helping me with my New Year’s resolution not to have shiny new book syndrome. 😉

  2. First Angie and then you?! This is not helping me with my New Year’s resolution not to have shiny new book syndrome. 😉 Hopefully I win the giveaway.

  3. Jac @ for love and books says

I love the idea of a fresh take on Contemp!! And I a thrilled at the idea of the whole story taking place in 24 hours. I cannot wait tread this book.

  4. I definitely want to read this one! It sounds so fun & I love that it has more depth than it seems too! Yay for surprisingly awesome books! 🙂

    • I mean, it’s not an issues book or anything dumb like that, but it is really very good. It surprised me the way that Anna And The French Kiss surprised me with how good it is.

  5. Oliver is my favorite kind of love interest too! Yay for not being a dick! 🙂

Thank you for the link love. 🙂

  6. okay, i don’t *love* contemps but this sounds really cute. almost like a John Hughes movie which, let’s face it, are the bombdiggity.

also, i’ve loved on the cover of this since i first laid my eyes on it. so i did put it on my list of contemp-hopefuls for the year. i doubt i’ll be disappointed since your review made it sound better than even the synopsis did.

sidenote: not that you asked or anything, but i read two contemps yesterday. both ripped my heart out and wrecked me, and they weren’t even about like drugs and stuff. i don’t know how people read these contemps all the time! i’m such a fantasy junkie, seriously.

i digress. as always, enjoy your input april. you’re just a cool chick.

  7. COSIGN ALL OF THIS. This was one of those books that I was hoping would be cute and swoony, and it was, but it was also way more than that out of nowhere, and that made it double awesome. Started my year off on a good foot!!

  8. “You see, Oliver is my FAVORITE type of love interest. He’s not a dick.”
Lol. That’s just great to hear. 😀
“He can keep banter up and I loved his whole back and fourth with Hadley and the easy conversation they had. Because you guys, being able to hold a decent conversation in a relationship is way more important in life than if he is a dangerous bad boy rebel.” I have to agree. Sure, a bad boy is hot, but conversation is better. 😀

  9. I have to get a copy of this book asap.

  10. I almost ordered this book over the weekend, but I didn’t. :o( I hadn’t read too much about it yet, so I was scared to get it. Now all these great reviews are popping up because it just came out, and I want to kick myself in the ass. lol

I’ve never been into the dangerous, bad, rebel kind of guy. I’m all about the love interest not being a twat. You are so right about conversation, you cannot have a relationship without that. I just doesn’t work. I need more authors to write about nerdy, sarcastic, intelligent boys who have dark hair and wear glasses. That’s just a personal preference. Lets just say when those naked pics of Harry Potter were released, I was all on that shit. (not in a pervy way though) lol

Love at first sight.. I know a ton of people dont believe in it.. but for serious! it’s real! when I was 20, I was in a horrible relationship. He was a total douche.. times were tough.. I had no car, I ended up going back to work at Burger King, because I just needed to gain my independance again, and I knew they would hire me back. On my second day, my shift was over and I was sitting outside waiting for a friend to pick me up. A co-worker I hadn’t met yet had just arrived.. I looked at him and the first thought in my head was ” I’m going to marry this guy. ” I shit you freaking not! It was so weird, I dont know why I would even think that. We started dating a couple months later, and we are still together today. We have been married for 8 1/2 years, together for 10 1/2, and I still love him more than any words can describe.

So those few minutes, watching him walk from his car door into the building, they were a huge turning point in my life. I don’t know how I knew.. I just did. Weird. I have to get this book!

    • Right, I’m nor really into that whole dangerous guy thing either. I’d rather date someone who treats me right.

Also your story about meeting your husband is adorable <3 I love hearing stories like that.

And yes yes yes, I love that about nerdy and sarcastic and intelligent guys.

Hey no shame in naked Harry Potter. At BEA lol in one of the lines we googled pictures of Dan Rad's penis ahahahaha

  11. F-yeah! I’ve heard such good buzz about this one, especially about Oliver and him not being a dick (way too many of them out there as it is–do we really have to populate the fiction world with them, too). Must. Read.

  12. YUP. I’m so glad that this book is getting the attention it deserves. “…the book stand out from the contemporary crowd as this is something different.” I felt like that too. It didn’t feel like a goofy, cute romance, yet it was somehow light and got me all warm and mushy inside. I love stumbling across books like these – I’m big on surprises 🙂 Lovely, to-the-point review, April!

  13. I’m reading this book right now, and am falling hard for it. And I am a sucker for books that take place over 24-hours.
Yay for banter and chemistry and acceptance. This is going to be a great year for Contemporary!

  14. Fabulous review! I couldn’t agree with you more! I loved this book, especially the romance. Oliver is so fabulous. I also liked that the book had a little bit more going on than just some romance. This one is an awesome contemp!

  15. Thanks for the review on this book. I am always looking for new interesting books to read and this just made it unto that list.
