10 Books I Am Excited To Read In 2012

As always, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish and is masterminded by my wonderful friend Jamie at The Perpetual Page Turner.

This week’s topic is 10 Books I Am Excited To Read In 2012. Friends, I love a new year because it’s always so full of possibilities. I’ve started doing this list of ten started by Galleysmith’s friend where you pick out books to read ahead of time, and I thought I would share with you 10 books from that list that I am super psyched to read.

1. Game Of Thrones by George RR Martin

I know, I put Game Of Thrones on a list EVERY OTHER WEEK, but you guys I want to keep my nerd card, therefore I WILL read it this year. Preferably this month.

2. Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard

Wanderlove

Wanderlove has been in my Netgalley queue and I am totally serious about chopping that down to zero.

3. A Thousand Lives by Julia Sheeres

A Thousand Lives

Yo, you know how I love cults? Well A Thousand Lives is all about Jim Jones. Hell yes. I started listening to this yesterday at the gym and it’s SO good. Also, a non-fiction. Yay for variety.

4. 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher

13 Reasons Why

2012 is my year to be in the know on books that everyone has read except for me, so I am totally going to read 13 Reasons Why because all my friends have read it.

5. Fire by Kristin Cashore

Fire

BITTERBLUE is coming out this year, but tragedy! I haven’t read Fire. I’m ready to let my world get rocked by this companion book.

6. Cinder by Melissa Meyer

Cinder

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned why I want to read Cinder in other posts. But Cinderella retellings are things that I am unable to resist.

7. Lovetorn by Kavita Daswani

Betrothals, moving to LA, culture. Hello, Lovetorn is a ME book.

8. Friends With Boys by Faith Erin Hicks

Friends With Boys

I love graphic novels and basically the plot of Friends With Boys is that Maggie is home schooled, but then goes to high school for the first time and there’s a spooky twist. YAY SPOOKY!

9. Struck by Jennifer Bosworth

Struck

Yo, cults. There are cults in this book according to goodreads and bro, I am always down for that.

10. Looking For Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta

Looking For Alibrandi, Melina Marchetta, Book Cover,

Looking For Alibrandi

Confession: I have not read any books by Melina Marchetta. I know, I know. Looking For Alibrandi seems to be the universal least favorite and I got it for like a penny at the library book sale, so if I don’t love it, I still know it only gets better from there.

Comments

  1. I want to read Game of Thrones, but I’m kind of intimidated. Maybe audiobook? Also, CINDER IS AMAZING. And I really liked Lovetorn, it was a seriously interesting look at another culture. And Struck was WEIRD. But good, but seriously weird. HAH. Okay, good list, April 🙂

  2. Fact: I was the first non-editor, non-beta reader to read Wanderlove. I LOVE love love love it. I can’t wait for it to come out so I can read the actual book.

  3. I tried reading Fire and it just didn’t work for me. I am, however, enjoying the audiobook.
I definitely can’t wait to read my copy of Cinder either! It sounds like it’s going to be amazing and I’ve heard so many good things! Great list this week!

  4. “Yo, cults.” BAHAHA my favorite quote today. So far. It’s only 12:41.

  5. I’ve heard such good things about Wanderlove and that’s in my TBR too. 🙂 Also, I’m planning to read Game of Thrones this year too — and I’ve been holding out on the TV show because I haven’t read it yet! We can do this! 🙂

  6. I totally want to cut down my Netgalley queue to 0 too! And reading Wanderlove will contribute to that although I don’t think it’s going to happen in my case. Wanderlove is definitely one of my most-excited to read for the first quarter of 2012 books!

  7. I think I’m the only person in the world who didn’t just LOVE 13 Reasons Why… but I definitely look forward to your thoughts on it…

A Thousand Lives sounds so good! I definitely need to add it to my list. Cults are always fascinating to read about.

Stop by and check out my Top Ten and Teaser Tuesday!

  8. I liked Fire even more than Graceling. Good idea to check it out before Bitterblue’s release.
And I’ve never heard of Lovetorn but it sounds fantastic.
I must admit I haven’t read any Melina Marchetta either, but this is the year.
    Awesome list!

  9. A Game of Thrones is also on my list of books to read. It’s slightly intimidating, as it gives off the vibe of being as long, harrowing and complicated as the Lord of the Rings books, but I really want to read it!

  10. A Game Of Thrones is on my must read list as well. 13 Reasons and Cinder rocked hope you love them.

  11. Great list! I can’t wait for Bitterblue, but like you I haven’t managed to read Fire yet. Struck sounds awesome – cults are great (in a reading about, watching movies about kinda way not the koolaid parts).

My top ten is here if you’d like a look 🙂

  12. I enjoyed Fire & Graceling very much and am looking forward to reading Bitterblue. Hope you do too 🙂

  13. I want to read Cinder too and hope to get to it next week. I still haven’t read 13 Reasons Why and would love to read that one this year too. I may attempt A Game of Thrones but I make no promises-it is kind of intimidating to me. It is my cousin’s favorite book and he told me I should read it years ago but now it is all famous and I feel more pressure about reading it and liking it. I hope you get to read it this month!

  14. Awesome list, and you know – I really liked Looking for Alibrandi!! And…crazily enough have never read her more famous works. Also, Fire is awesome, but I’ve heard that people didn’t like it as much as Graceling.

P.S. I SERIOUSLY need to read Game of Thrones too. My nerd card might be revoked at any second…

  15. I just finished CINDER last night. Cyborgs! Aliens! Ridiculous amounts of androids! Cinderella should’ve been like this from the beginning.

  16. Game of Thrones I have been wanting to read for some time. I guess I have to step up my game if I’m owning up to my nerdom.

And if it makes you feel any better, I haven’t read 13 Reasons Why either. It’s on my list too!

  17. Game of Thrones is awesome. An investement because Dude. Long series. But the characters in it are among my absolute favourite fictional people as well as my absolutely most hated (and then some of the hated ones because most loved and you don’t even notice it happening and then BAM you don’t know what side you are rooting for…) ANYWAY, definitely a must read!

I am dying to read Wanderlove too! And Cinder! I am a complete sucker for all things Cinderella based.

  18. A Thousand Lives is high on the creepy/disturbing/wtf scale. Super good, but the more I read the more I wondered who in the hell these people are who thought that Jim freaking Jones was some kind of deity.

  19. You and I need to talk more. Game of Thrones and Wanderlust are both on my list, and I am slightly obsessed with learning more about cultish or highly dysfunctional societies like Jonesboro (and FDLS, etc.). Yea for Machetta, yea for the cultish book, Lovetorn and CInder. We need to get some BDB on there – I’d love to see your reaction to Ward-speak.

  20. Holy Cow, you must remedy that Melina Marchetta thing pronto. I have only read two of hers, On the Jellicoe Road and Saving Francesca (the latter being my fave) and she is AMAZING. My goal for 2012 is to read all the rest of her books:)

  21. This is my first comment on your blog but I read it frequently. I too really want to read Game of Thrones and I’ve heard so many good things about it. I am kind of intimidated by it though, It’s out of my comfort zone and seems really dense. I am hoping to get around to it though, I may try what another commenter said – listening on audiobook. That has helped me get through ones I wasnt sure about before!

  22. A little hint: if you can, listen to Thirteen Reasons Why. I got the audiobook to listen to on a trip to the beach and it was FANTASTIC! Definitely added to the entire plot. Either way you read it, enjoy!

  23. Game of Thrones FTW! You won’t regret it. I completely agree with Alwyn, too: George is a sneaky bastard who makes you hate people and then all of a sudden you feel bad for them or love them, and the characters you love all of a sudden make you want to bash your head into a wall. Or maybe I’m just a crazy person. 😉
And I’m with on Melina Marchetta. Sadly. Jellicoe Road is going down this year!
Also, since you’re a sucker for Cinderella like me, did you know that Queen of Glass is a Cinderella story/retelling/thing? I can’t remember if I knew and then forgot, but I’m looking forward to that one HUGELY.

  24. I have a copy of A Thousand Lives calling to me from the shelves, and I haven’t read a non-fiction in a while, so it might be my first of 2012 as well.

  25. that Cinder book looks quite interesting.

  26. APRIL! You have got to read Melina Marchetta…whenever you do get to Jellicoe Road your mind will be BLOWN. Bah. Low. Nuh.

    Also, Fire rocks.

  27. Wanderlove is amazing, it really took me by surprise. I hope you enjoy it when you get to it!

    Great list! 🙂

  28. They are all such awesome books (or seem to be). Alibrandi is not bad but it’s her first book and the improvements in her writing are pretty obvious as you continue reading her work. The Piper’s Son is more adult fiction than YA fiction I believe because it has such a wide rage of perspectives. Alibrandi is pretty similar to the rest of her books except well, you’ll see.

  29. We have a book in common on our lists. Thirteen Reasons Why is a good book. My husband has banned me from watching the HBO series until I read A Game of Thrones. So I guess I’ll be reading that this year as well. Great list!

    My Top Ten

  30. You’ve got an amazing list there–I have to tell you I just picked up GAME OF THRONES last week and I’m obsessed. I HAVE to read the entire series. So fab.

And WANDERLOVE was beautiful–made me want to travel so badly. Happy reading!

  31. VIRGILLL.

And also FIRE! MAN I love those books. I can’t wait for Bitterblue.

  32. My Cinder post goes live at 7:13 am tomorrow. READ THAT BOOK. Seriously.

Also, I only read Thirteen Reasons Why last, er, in 2010. I was behind and I thought the only one left who didn’t read it. 🙂 You win, babe. You will not regret reading that book either. Excellent story.

  33. Yes to Fire! Loved that book.

You haven’t read any of Marchetta’s books? Oh wow, you need to catch up! I would love for you to read Jellicoe Road or The Piper’s Son (read Saving Francesca first though) because those two are AMAZING. Seriously awesome contemporary YA.

  34. Fire & Cinder, yo. Get on ’em.

  35. Game of Thrones is epic, I hope you enjoy it. I just downloaded Cinder so I’m very excited about that one too!

  36. Wanderlove is so amazing!!! I loved it so much, I hope you like it too!! Also, I have not read 13 reasons why and I know that I should! I hope I can get to it this year also.

  37. You kinda are missing out on life because you haven’t read Fire, just saying. It is kinda like 10 times more awesome than Graceling 😉 Such a great list.
