‘Help, you know I need someone, help’ On Vacation and Some Reading Choices

Like many of you, I am on vacation technically until January 2nd, which leaves plenty of time for reading and reviewing and getting to know my new iMac (Wednesday).

Anyways, tonight I am working an overnight shift from 11p.m. to 4:30ish a.m., meaning I will watch a hotline that likely won’t ring, knock on wood. ALSO meaning that I have to keep myself awake during those long hours with a book. I have a stack from Amazon Vine that I have been meaning to get through.

Amazon Vine Stack of Books

Vine TBR

Do you have any recommendations on what to read first re: the Vine books? Any that really kept you on the edge of your seat?

ALSO, I have this stack below of potential reads during my vacation. Are there any that you think I should absolutely move right up to the top of my pile?

Any suggestions and help are GREATLY appreciated!

  1. I highly recommend both Hugo Cabret and The Host.

  2. Nice stack! I’ve not read any of those, but I have on my list to read this week: Everneath, Cinder, and Under the Never Sky!

  3. I heard mixed reviews on Under the Never Sky and Hugo is LONG. I read it in college, although interesting, never again.

  4. I spy THE HOST at the bottom of that stack. I know it gets a lot of flack because it’s written by Stephenie Meyer, but honestly …it’s such a good story! The characters are awesome and swoon-worthy and although the whole alien/body-snatchers stuff isn’t super original, it’s just a good story and there are some pretty badass moments. Yes, there’s this weird lull in the middle with the main character wandering in the desert and I find people always give up on the book when they reach that point, but after that whole ordeal, it gets SO GOOD.

I haven’t read any of the Vine books, but I suppose I would vote for Dearly Departed since I have yet to read my own copy and it would be cool to hear your thoughts before I do so πŸ™‚

  5. Dude, Cinder! It is stupendous, amazing *add other superlative here.* The Gathering Storm, well, it had a lot of potential and only lived up to about 3/4s of it (and I might be being generous here). The Gathering is much the same as all Armstrong books, good, solid without having the power to reduce me to a quivering mass (like Eona). Though since it is set on Vancouver Island, I have a major soft spot for it (it being somewhat local and all). Have a fun reading time.

  6. Definitely Ready Player One, The Gathering Storm and Dearly Departed (in terms of Vine books).

And then Cinder! I just finished it and I loved it! Such a fun read!

  7. Dearly, Departed! One of my favourite books of the year. And Everneath is meant to be really good!

  8. I recently picked up Dearly Departed and it looked amazing. You should bump up The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I know it looks really fat, but it only takes about two hours to read. Enjoy your vacation!

  9. Oh, The Summer I Turned Pretty is on there, right? Those books are SO PRETTY. They’re all broody and intense and lovely. I’ve been hearing LOTS of great things about Cinder, too!

  10. CINDER was fabulous; EVERNEATH was quite good; and READY PLAYER ONE was one of my faves of the year, though I think you have to be a child of the 80’s to truly appreciate it.

Wasn’t a fan of DEARLY, DEPARTED or UNLEASHED but have read good reviews from others.

I really want to read HUGO (def. before I see the movie). Happy reading!

  11. You can’t go wrong with Cinder, Dearly Departed or Ready Player One. I thought all of them were great. The Host was also very good and very different from Twilight.

  12. I loved Dearly Departed, and until I read that book zombie storylines were my least fave of all the paranormals. Never in a million years did I think I would find a zombie sexy:) In your vacay pile I would second Lindsey’s reccomendation of The Host. I thought it was a great book and completely unlike the Twilight series. Plus the movie will be coming out next year and it looks like it’s going to have an amazing cast:)

  13. cinder

  14. Well, I have several of those in my reading pile but have read NONE of them! But I suggest The Gathering Storm because it looks good and I need to read it soon too.

  15. Is that.. The Summer I Turned Pretty?! LE GASP. You must read that. MUST! πŸ˜€

  16. This may not be the case, but it seems like you have a lot of time to read with your job. I hope you don’t mind me asking, but what do you do for a living? Does it indeed leave you a lot of time for reading? Or are you one of those multitasking readers? You certainly read a lot more books in a year than I do, and it’s not for lack of trying! You’re probably just a much fast reader than I am. =P I haven’t read any of the books in your piles, but they all look really good and a lot of them are on my tbr pile. If I were you, I would go for Dearly Departed and/or Cinder first.

  17. I’m dying to read Dearly Departed and Unleashed. Can’t wait to hear what you think of them! πŸ™‚

  18. I have not read any of those, but from what I’ve heard I would read Hugo, Everneath, Never Sky, and Cinder

  19. Dang, I know this is late…but When The Sea Is Rising Red by Cat Hellisen reminded me of the Gemma Doyle trilogy in it’s style. And I know you liked those books. I read and reviewed it if you want to peep it. But I highly recommend it because there’s magic in there and some craziness that totally WORKS. Seriously, I wonder if you might really like that one. It’s a little fresh and different. And a complete feast for your senses. I loved it.

  20. I’m voting for Hugo. It’s dense, but it’s a nice quick read and it has PICTURES!
