Jason has a problem. He doesn't remember anything before waking up on a school bus holding hands with a girl. Apparently she's his girlfriend Piper, his best friend is a kid named Leo, and they're all students in the Wilderness School, a boarding school for "bad kids." What he did to end up here, Jason has no idea—except that everything seems very wrong.

Compadres, I am totally team half-blood. Granted, I’ve only read the first two books in the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series and The Lost Hero, but that’s enough to turn me into a Rick Riordan fangirl. Seriously, I think his wildly popular Percy Jackson books are what kicked off that new Greek mythology trend. The Lost Hero begins spin-off series ‘The Heroes of Olympus‘ and is every bit as awesome and hilarious, with returning characters from the Percy Jackson series.

The Lost Hero follows demigod Jason (yeah, THAT Jason) who wakes up on a bus trip for the Wilderness Reform School with zero memories. He is told that Piper is his girlfriend and Leo is his best friend. At the Grand Canyon, Jason, Piper and Leo are attacked by a monster and discover that they are demigods. They are then shipped off to Camp Half Blood where they are claimed and receive a quest — that’s all I will say because I don’t want to spoil the plot for you.

The chapters alternate between Jason, Leo and Piper as we learn of their backgrounds and internal struggles. The Greek and Roman mythology element is perfectly weaved in — plus there’s a few bombshells dropped that changed my thoughts on the Percy Jackson books. I really loved Piper’s character – she’s part Native American and her mother is NOT the goddess that she expected. Piper has this huge identity struggle. ALSO YOU GUYS, Riordan does not white wash his books. Hip hip hooray for characters of color, and MAIN characters at that. PLUS, you know that we ALL want Jason and Piper to just hook up already (their relationship is in a weird place because Jason doesn’t remember her as his girlfriend). Leo provides fantastic comic relief, but his character is more complex than it is stock. Sidebar: Festus, the giant metal flying dragon: ILY SO HARD.

I thought The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan was a captivating, fast paced story. As usual, I enjoyed Joshua Swanson’s (Shipbreaker) narration. His voice takes getting used to and can sound a bit robotic or computer generated if you haven’t heard him before. I don’t recommend letting him be your first narrator, but when you have some audiobooks under your belt and experience, THEN try him out. The audiobook of The Lost Hero is 16 hours and 34 minutes unabridged and produced by The Listening Library.

Disclosure: I purchased this book with my Audible credit.

  1. Hmmm I REALLY enjoyed the Percy Jackson series, but for some reason I have yet to check out The Lost Hero yet. I think your review has convinced me to up it on my to-read list!

  2. I’m kinda with Lindsey on that.. I loved/adored all of the Percy Jackson series. I don’t know why I haven’t picked this one up yet. I guess because I don’t own any of the Percy Jackson books. I did.. but a coworker borrowed them, quit and moved states away without returning them. <— Still a little bitter about that. lol Crazy how I can lend a book to a blogger halfway across the US, and not have to worry about it being returned, but people you actually know.. bleh.

Anyway, I love your review. I hadn't even looked up to see what this one was about.. I knew it was about some more half bloods.. Now I know a ton more! 🙂 Have a great day!

Oh! and question… If I clicked the link to get it off of amazon.. do you only get credit if I purchase it right that moment.. or will you get credit if I add it to my wishlist from your link and purchase it at a later date?

  3. Nice review! I loved the original series but wasn’t sure I’d like this one as much. Thankfully I did and The Son of Neptune is even better than The Lost Hero. I hope you listen to that one soon. I think you’ll love it 🙂

I listened to a sample of this on Audible and wasn’t crazy about the narrator. I kind of prefer the narrator from The Kane Chronicles more. I’m a Rick Riordan fangirl too and the funny thing is that for years I had no desire to pick up his books till I saw that a movie was being made. I ended up not liking the movie but I loved all his books 🙂

  4. I’m so glad you love Percy!! And The Lost Hero too! I seriously just finished The Son of Neptune today and I’m like “you need to go read it NOW.” It’s seriously awesome too. It’s all about Camp Jupiter, but it’s just as good. I won’t say you won’t even miss Half-Blood or anything, but Jupiter is a good substitute.
I’m so glad Percy is getting the love he deserves :]

  5. IRick riordans books. I am looking for contests to meet him or get him to come to my school but it’s not going well.i hope i could find 1 soon!
