Filling The Silence: My Audiobook Year 2010-2011

Ya’ll this has been the year of the audiobook for me. I’ve dabbled before, but this year I have turned into a full on convert. I bit the bullet and got audible on my iPhone which has been the perfect venue for listening to audiobooks.

You know, I’m actually at the point where I feel guilty if I listen to music while driving instead of audiobooks. I never thought I would be a fan of audio. I always thought of it as cheating, however, now I realize it is a wonderful new medium in which to experience stories.

I credit Harry Potter with really hooking me on audio. Ya’ll Jim Dale does some amazing narraration, and brought my Harry Potter experience to a whole new level. You see, I wanted to re-read Harry Potter but didn’t exactly have time. Enter audiobooks. I’d listen while driving.

Eventually listening while driving turned into listening while doing the rare workout into listening while doing dishes.

Now I find I actually don’t mind doing chores as long as I have a good audiobook to listen to.

I also find that if it’s just me all by myself in the office, a nice audiobook helps to pass the time while I work on things like documentation or putting together my work newsletter.

My name is April and I am an audiobooks addict.

This post is based on a prompt from Jen at Devourer of Books who is hosting audiobooks week. Check it out here.

  1. I totally used to consider audiobooks cheating too, plus my husband told me it was. Then, like you, I listened and realized they’re completely valid.

  2. Thanks for being so vocal about your love of audiobooks. I probably wouldn’t have tried them out otherwise. I just requested Harry Potter at my library based on your rec! Thanks for being awesome!

  3. I feel guilty now too if I’m on a longish car ride and am listening to music instead of audio. Glad I’m not alone!

Thanks for the post. I love audiobooks and mainly listen to them in the car as I have an hour commute to and from work. I rarely listen to radio anymore.

  5. I have listened to all the Harry Potter books on audio last year and just fell in love with hem all over again!

One of the other posts mentioned they listened to the HP books as narrated by Stephen Fry. I love him, so I think I’ll have to go with his version. I’m looking for some good YA recommendations on audio. Do you have any ideas?

  7. The Harry Potter audiobooks are my favorites. I really enjoy the way Jim Dale brings the characters to life. Not to mention that my car’s stupid CD player that won’t play new CDs has no problem with Harry Potter. Basically I listen to the audiobooks over and over on my way to work because I prefer it to the radio. If I could, I’d also listen to other newer audiobooks that I’ve heard are fantastic like The Help. Instead I’m stuck with books that are old enough that my car’s CD player will actually play them. I do love Harry Potter but sometimes I want to listen to something else 🙂

  8. This must have been the year of the audiobook, so many people became addicted to them!

  9. I love, love, love audiobooks and I cna completely identify with feeling “guilty” for listening to music sometimes. I feel like I’m wasting valuable reading time. So glad you’re a convert.
