When it comes to devouring her delightfully outrageous, phenomenally fun fiction, Meg Cabot’s fans are Insatiable! And now the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Princess Diaries—not to mention a host of wonderfully winning grown-up novels like Queen of Babble, Big Boned, and Every Boy’s Got One—has a subject she can really sink her teeth into: vampires! A deliciously twisted modern-day sequel to Bram Stoker’s classic Dracula, Cabot’s Insatiable will leave you laughing…and hungry for more!

No one quite brings the sexytimes like Meg Cabot. Especially when she takes on the world of vampires in Insatiable.

Confession: I still like vampire books. Even though it seems the market is saturated with them, I’ve yet to grow bored or tired of them. Especially when the writing and the plot is as compelling as Insatiable.

Meena Harper, intrepid main character, is a writer for the soap opera Insatiable. She lives with her unemployed brother Jon and her dog, a pomeranian mix named Jack Bauer. Meena hates vampires and how our culture has become obsessed with them. This is hilarious, because Meena ends up falling pretty hard for Lucien Antonescue, the prince of darkness aka prince of the vampires. Lucien is currently in America to investigate a spat of murders. Throw in a religious order of vampire slayers known as the Palatine Guard to the mix, and you have a rollicking book with an adventurous plot line. The Palatine Guard send their ace in the hold, Alaric Wulf, to solve the murders. Oh, and just one little thing I forgot to mention, Meena can foretell the death of everyone she comes into contact with.

Characterization is something I think Cabot excels at. I absolutely loved Meena. She has this hero complex, is loyal to her friends and family. But, she’s got her weaknesses too. Meena is a bit too nice, and is not assertive enough to stand up for herself when she is passed over for a promotion. Then there is Lucien, who is kind of easy on the brain. Ya’ll he brings the swoons like whoa. He is the prince of darkness, like I said before. He’s got a temper though, and Cabot does not let him off the hook for that. Oh and he’s interested in living a peaceful existence as a vampire. Then we have his rival, Alaric. Alaric has a history. He hates vampires. However, he is incredibly badass. At first he is incredibly annoying, but I found he grew on me after awhile. THEN we have the side characters, and I only want to mention Meena’s neighbors: Mary Lou and Emil. They are socialites and seem kind of shallow at first, but I found they really came through for Meena and had me pumping my fist in their honor.

I found Insatiable to be funny with sarcasm and lines that appeal to my twisted sense of humor.

Things heat up relatively fast. As this is adult there is no cheap fade to black, oh no. We get the full monty. And let me just say YAY to that. Both of the male leads, Alaric and Lucien, are viable contendors for Meena’s heart. I was solidly Team Lucien, but actually wound up with a change of heart and ended up rooting for Alaric. This rarely happens with me. Once my mind is made up, it stays made up.

In all,  I found Insatiable by Meg Cabot to be an engrossing, light read. I think this is a wonderful summer book, especially for those of us who still like vampires.

  1. I loved Meena too! Such a sassy heroine, and I always enjoy Meg Cabot’s sense of humor 🙂

  2. Ha! Team Alaric. Glad I’m not the only one! 🙂
I really liked this book though at times I kind of wanted to shake Meena. I started out liking Lucien but by the end of the book I found him too controlling. Alaric was my favorite by far. He isn’t mentioned in the description of Overbite but I really hope he is around a lot in that one too.
I do prefer Meg Cabot’s books for adults (I think this would have to be my favorite of hers) and have been waiting for the sequel for a long time. Great review!

  3. I’ve yet to read a Meg Cabot book I didn’t love! Thanks for the review – I can’t wait to get my hands on this one!

  4. Great review! I really enjoyed this book too! I also just finished Overbite, the sequel, and while it’s not as romance-filled, it is still amazing.

  5. Sexytimes for the win!! I still haven’t read all of The Princess Diaries books and this one is being added to the list 🙂

  6. Oooh, this one sounds good. Loving that it’s adult so all that sexual tension pays off with an actual scene 😉 Well written and good characters too. It’s def. going on my tbr list. Great review!

The only things about this book that I loved was the sense of humor and some parts of the character’s attitude. Other then that, I rather found this book annoying. I disliked the ending; how Meena would give up on Lucien so easily when he cared for her with all his heart. The ending was disappointing, really. When I finished the book and neatly tucked it beside my bed I couldn’t help but just stare at the novel with disappointment.

  8. I liked meena I liked the story I just wanted more of the relationship between her and her sexy vamp lol

  9. I’ve read a couple of Meg Cabot books a few years ago, and I remember thoroughly enjoying them. I don’t think anyone can really turn down a really good vampire book, so I’ll have to check it out!

    Great review!
