Kate Lowry didn't think dead best friends could send e-mails. But when she gets an e-mail from Grace, she’s not so sure.

Kate,
I'm here…
sort of.
Find Cameron.
He knows.
I shouldn't be writing.
Don't tell.
They'll hurt you.

Now Kate has no choice but to prove once and for all that Grace’s death was more than just a tragic accident. But secrets haunt the halls of her elite private school. Secrets people will do anything to protect. Even if it means getting rid of the girl trying to solve a murder...

I wish more books had characters with pink hair who rocked pearls. Really, I do. I’ve always wanted pink hair ever since that one contestant on Rock of Love had that awesome pink hair. I know, I know, trashy reality show. BUT, pink hair is awesome, kind of like Kate Lowry, heroine of The Liar Society by Lisa and Laura Roecker.

One year ago, Kate Lowry’s best friend Grace died in a mysterious fire at their posh academy, Pemberly Day. Flash forward to now. Kate is receiving some mysterious emails from dead Grace saying ‘find me’. Friends, a mystery is on our hands. With the assistance of dorky neighbor ginger Seth and new, mysterious bad boy Liam, Kate blazes forth in the footsteps of Nancy Drew to solve the mystery.

If you are at all familiar with Lisa and Laura Roecker’s blog, I imagine you have an idea of their writing style. There is snark a-plenty. The style feels young and fresh. By young, I don’t mean the book feels immature, I mean that The Liar Society and Kate feel like people I think teens will be able to relate to. For example, Kate goes on about feeling like a dork riding her bike around, and straight-up I felt like that in high school which is why I got rides to school with friends instead of riding my bike.

The male lead, Liam is awesome. He’s badass without being a douchebag. I think too often the books I read with ‘bad boy’ characters conflate being a ‘bad boy’ with being an asshole, and straight up they are not the same. The cool thing about Liam is he’s there for his friends in a tight spot. He isn’t a jerk to Kate. Plus he’s artsy. I like that a lot and wish more books would feature non-asshole bad boy characters.

Kate, herself, was a kickass leading lady. I liked how she was down to solve the mystery of Grace’s death, but still used her brain about it. I hardly found myself thinking ‘ NO DON’T GO DOWN THE SCARY DARK HALLWAY ALONE’ because Kate wasn’t an idiot like that. I gotta hand it to smart and sassy heroines, would rather those every time than a wet blanket heroine. Also, she has killer fashion sense, hello only classy girls can pull off pearls.

I wholeheartedly recommend The Liar Society by Lisa and Laura Roecker if you are down for: SECRET SOCIETIES, LATIN, THINGS THAT ARE PINK, GINGERS, and NANCY DREW-ESQUE ESCAPADES! And yes, this book does deserve capslocking.
