What’s The Short Story Morning Glory? On Children of The Revolution by Maureen Johnson

I think I will stick with What’s The Short Story Morning Glory as a title for the time being. Also will be playing with the format of this feature.

As usual, this week’s short story is from Zombies Vs. Unicorns.

Short Story Title: Children of the Revolution

Author: Maureen Johnson

Nutshell Plot: On a whim, Sofie, a young college student follows her boyfriend to pick organic berries in England on a farm. The farm is less than promised, her boyfriend ditches her and she comes to work as a nanny in a sinister household. There are zombies.

My thoughts: I am pretty sure this story takes the cake for being the creepiest one so far. First off, there are stupid celebrities in sort of a scientology cult. And you know, I love cults. Second, there are children, and there’s nothing I find more scary in movies than evil children. KIDS are horrifying, especially when they eat your brains. This is why I have no maternal instincts. Because if a kid tries to eat my brains because it’s a zombie, I’d either run, or shoot it, not try and hug it and figure out what’s wrong with it. No sir. Anyways, the writing is snappy, funny, and Johnson does a great job of building a creepy atmosphere. The writing crescendos into OMFGWTFHOLYHELL material in a fitting manner. Also, I would love to see Johnson write a horror novel for YA, because she’s good ya’ll. Real good.

  1. I have to agree. There is nothing more terrifying than small children who eat your brains. I love Johnson’s writing.

  2. I came across your website through Twitter. Love your reviews! I definitely want to check out Zombies vs. Unicorns. I love a good scary story, and I definitely love zombies. While I have a kid, I also agree that scary kids are the creepiest. Like can’t watch Children of the Corn. Although someone once came to my blog via the search zombie children, now that freaked me out. Anyway, love the blog!
