Chloe Saunders is fifteen and would love to be normal. Unfortunately, Chloe happens to be a genetically engineered necromancer who can raise the dead without even trying. She and her equally gifted (or should that be 'cursed'?) friends are now running for their lives from the evil corporation that created them.

As if that's not enough, Chloe is struggling with her feelings for Simon, a sweet-tempered sorcerer, and his brother Derek, a not so sweet-tempered werewolf. And she has a horrible feeling she's leaning towards the werewolf...

Definitely not normal.

I love the Darkest Powers trilogy. There. I said it. These are a few of my favorite pleasure reads. Notice I drop the guilty because I feel no guilt when reading books that make me happy.

*Slight spoilers for first two books lie ahead.

The Reckoning by Kelley Armstrong picks up directly where The Awakening leaves off. In this action packed adventure, Chloe, Derek (<3), Simon, and Tori are still on the run from the Edison group. Interestingly enough, this fast-paced trilogy only spans two weeks.

The quartet have finally made it to a safe house. However, all is not as it seems and their troubles are not over. Otherwise, where would the story have to go? Some lingering questions I had from the first two books were answered and some were left hanging.

Okay, so although these books may be lacking in depth, they totally make up for it in FUN. Such is not always the case but these books are like crack to me. I kept turning the pages wondering what scrapes these characters will wander into next. Will Chloe be TSTL and trust Edison Group, etc?

Chloe may be little, but she’s full of spunk and has come a long way from the first book when she was shy and scared of her powers. She stands up for herself on several occasions. I love it when people who keep on taking shit stop doing that, when they say CUT IT OUT or KNOCK IT OFF. It’s so fantastic when characters find their voice.

ALSO, the pseudo-love triangle. Come on y’all, we know the choice she’s going to make is resolved. AND plus there are metaphorical fire works. AND TLA. True lurve always. Maybe not quite that, but you know what I mean.

Basically, I got all I wanted out of this book, including kissing scenes, hurrah! So, I can’t quite be objective. Either you like this series or you don’t. If you’ve got a penchant for paranormal romance that reads like book crack, check the Darkest Powers out.

  1. I have been wanting to start this series and hopefully I will get to it this year. It says something if you like it because while there are some reviewers who gush over every YA paranormal they read I know you are not one of them. Hopefully I will love the series too. Great review!

  2. I just bought the first 2 books in the series. I can’t wait to read them!
