Weston Wilson is not immortal and he is of this world. But, aging is not part of his existence, and eighteen-year-old Sophie Slone is determined to find out why. In doing so, she could also uncover something about her own life expectancy that she may not want to know. Suddenly, immortality will mean everything and nothing all at the same time.Intensely fascinating and rich with determination, The Pace brings together romance, mystery, and suspense in a compelling bond that is sure to have readers asking for more.

The Pace by Shelena Shorts is a YA book, written through the first person perspective of Sophie. Sophie is an 18 year old homeschooled girl who falls in love rather quickly with a 19 year old named Weston. Weston has everything a girl could ask for, he’s nice, smart, rich, and easy on the eyes. However, Weston has a secret.

I felt there was a lot of potential in The Pace by Shelena Shorts, however, I was not a huge fan of the execution. I prefer books which show me essential information instead of straight out telling me. There was plenty of first I did this, then I did that, much like a laundry list of I-actions. I felt the love was a bit contrived, as it seemed to only be based on the fact that Wes (short for Weston) is perfect. Eventually, there is an explanation for why Wes is so into Sophie, however, I felt this aspect was a bit blah. I want relationships in books to be based on things which are real.

However, despite all of my criticism, I felt The Pace by Shelena Shorts was an addictive read. I kept wanting to know what would happen next. I think the writing style was very similar to Twilight. It’s not perfect, but that certainly does not stop you from reading at all. I did like Sophie and felt she was authentic, plus the twist was fantastic and certainly creative compared to most paranormal fare. There is a planned sequel to the Pace, I am not aware of when it is coming out, but I do hope it will be better than The Pace, as I see a lot of potential in this story. I hope for more fleshing out of the characters and definitely more action.

While reading The Pace by Shelena Shorts, I recommend you drink orange juice, as orange juice is rather decent on it’s own, but when you mix it with something rather adult, what an awesome combination. I think The Pace can stand on it’s own, but tweak it with a few improvements and there is potential to be a fantastic book.

I just reviewed this book yesterday and agree with you. Wes was a little too perfect for me and I would have liked to see a little more going on to explain the strength of love the two had with each other.
